TAX LISTING From Page 1-A what is shown by the Department of Motor Vehicles records. The postcard gives you the chance to tell county tax assessors why you might not owe taxes on the car and truck they have listed, such as the vehicle being in anoth- er person's name. You need to re- turn the card.immediately if you might not owe taxes on the vehi- cles they have listed. Hendrick said that cdrs, trucks, trailers, and motorcycles will no longer have to be listed in January, Unregistered, untagged motor ve- hicles must still be listed annually in January and will be billed with other personal property. Hendrick reminds that when you receive your vehicle registration from DMV, make sure your ad- dress and county are correct. DMV must be notified $6 you are taxed: by the proper county and munici- pality. About three months after your registration renewal, you will re- ceive a bill which is payable on the first day of the following month. For example, if you have a March renewal, you will receive the bill in June, it will be due on July 1 and must be paid by July 31 to avoid the addition of interest. You will receive a separate bill on each reg- istered vehicle you own. It is im- portant to remember that mortgage companies may no longer pay mo- tor vehicles through escrow. Hendrick says that you may get a bill from a county or municipali- ty in which you do not reside at the time of registration renewal. If this were to occur, you may go either to the county which billed you or the county which should have billed you in order to correct the error, All incorrect billings should be corrected within 30 days. If taxes are not paid on time, the county tax collector will issue a block. If a vehicle receives a block, the registration cannot be renewed again until the taxes plus interest have been paid. Registration can only be renewed on a blocked ve- . hicle after a paid tax receipt has ’ been presented to DMV. Hendrick says the valuation of your motor vehicle may he ap- pealed ‘in the same manner as the valuation of other property. By statute, a valuation appeal must be brought within 30 days from the date notice is prepared. When fil- ing an appeal, you must pay the taxes first. If the value is changed, the taxes will be adjusted as neces- sary. The county office is also mailing forms this week to elderly who qualified for tax exemptions last year. ” Hendrick says his office will probably be flooded with calls about the new policy but he be- lieves it will work. "After the first year I think we'll see a big differ- ence in the flow of collections and the new system will also clean up the DMV list," he said.
