SIE — Se David Dellinger has returned from his first trip to Europe where he visited former Kings Mountain exchange student Patrik Frei in Switzerland. Dellinger and Frei became friends when Dellinger coached a KMHS tennis team where Frei was one of the star players. “It was really challenging to talk with people who didn't speak English and I learned from their impressions," said Dellinger, who stayed with Mary Anne and Peter Frei and their sons, Christian, 11, Pascal, 16, and Patrik, 19, in Oberkirch, Switzerland. In Kings Mountain last year Patrik lived with Mr. and Mrs. Ken Rochford in Gold Run Community. The Frie family enjoyed opening Christmas presents from the Rochfords during Dellinger's visit. Skiing in the Swiss Alps was an experience for Dellinger. An avid skier, he enjoyed ski trips to the Andermatt Mountains, Sorenberg and to Lenzerheide Valbella. The Frei family lives about an hour's ride on the train from Zurich and close to Lurcene, which Dellinger enjoyed touring by train and bicycle. . Patrik and his mother speak English fluently but the other members of the family speak Swiss-German which proved chal- lenging for Dellinger. He said young people in the English class in which he was speaker were curi- David Dellinger back from Europe ous about the United States, about politics, and wanted to know if he voted for Bush or Clinton in the re- cent presidential elections. Some members of the class could speak some broken English but Dellinger was a hit with them because he was the only man they had heard speak the formal English language. He said the questions they posed were tough. People are friendly and the streets are clean and free of crime, said Dellinger. He said that he loved Fondue and Swiss meals and celebrated New Year's Day six hours earlier than his Kings Mountain friends. He attended a New Year's Eve party in his new friend's home. The weather was very cold but perfect for the snow skiing trips the young people made to the Swiss Alps. He said he was met at the Airport by his new friends and quickly recognized Patrik by the KMHS black and gold tennis jack- et he wore. A 1986 graduate of KMHS, he is the son of William Gene and Barbara Dellinger and is a recent graduate of UNC at Charlotte, where he majored in geography and urban planning. He is em- ployed at Eckerd Drug Store and also does some land use mapping for the county. Active in Cleveland County Jaycees, he will head up the 1993 membership drive.
