A 2 TT HE EE Ts HH TH i HE TE Ee a en Marcus Bell tries to work the ball inside for Kings Mountain's Mountaineers. The Mountaineers host Shelby Friday. Kings Mountain's Mountaineers almost pulled off what would have been a sensational fourth quarter comeback but fell to Burns 54-49 in Southwestern 3-A Conference basketball action Friday night at Fallston. The Mountaineers trailed 44-22 going into the final eight minutes but cut the margin to five points before giving out of steam in the fi- nal minute. Burns, which committed 26 turnovers in the game, couldn't hold onto the ball in the fourth quarter and also missed six of nine foul shots in the final four minutes. The Mountaineers, who experi- enced their coldest shooting night of the season, finally got the shots to start falling ‘in the fourth quarter. With Burns leading 51-39 with 2 1/2 minutes to play, the Mountaineers got consecutive three-pointers from Marquiz Williamson, Bryan Leftwich and Justin Jones to pull within 53-48 with 50 seconds to play. But the Mountaineers couldn't hit a field goal after that. The Bulldogs’ height advantage was the big difference. They played a zone defense all night, forcing the Mountaineers to shoot from the perimeter, and the KM lads couldn't hit. The Bulldogs out- rebounded the Mountaineers 45- 29. Kings Mountain kept the game close in the first quarter as Burns Lady Patriots down Lincolnton Kings Mountain Middle School's girls basketball team defeated West Lincoln 36-29 Thursday for their first victory of the season. "We have excellent team speed, but sometimes we play too fast and it gets us in trouble," she says. "We have an unselfish attitude. The kids lay hard and they play together. And we have pretty good size. We have some girls with size but we need to get tougher under the boards and make good outlet pass- es’! Albergine said the team's biggest weakness is a lack of confidence. "These girls do a lot of good things in practice, but we haven't done a good job of handling the pressure of game situations. We've worked iCanmehard on taking advantage of our SuaigiOuemspeed but! yet playing | “urider con-{ ~ trol. We're improving in this area. I'm really counting on a few girls to give us the leadership we need. "Kisha Hamrick, Tamra Webber, Dee’Byers and Allene Barron are developing into good players and play well together. Kisha Hamrick scored 30 points in our game against West Lincoln and Allene Barron is developing into a real fine rebounder and defensive play- er. Our goal is to continue to im- prove over the next month and work on building our confidence as individuals and as a team."
