Page 10A-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thursday, February 4, 1993 KM to host state tournament Kings Mountain Recreation Department is preparing to host the annual Dixie Youth Minor League (AAA) baseball tournament July 24-30 at Deal Street Park. Recreation Director David Hancock attended a state Dixie Youth meeting last weekend in Pinehurst where he presented final plans for the event. Ten teams, including the host Kings Mountain team, will com- pete in the double-elimination event which is expected to draw 500 people per night. Regional champions will come from such ar- eas as Dallas, Charlotte, Reidsville, Troy, Whiteville, Wilmington, Fayetteville, Wallace and Clarkton. This is the first time Kings Mountain has hosted the state tour- nament since 1974, when NBA basketball star Michael Jordan - competed for the Wilmington all-. stars. A big opening ceremony will be held on Friday, July 23 for players, coaches and families and will in- clude a cookout, music and other entertainment. Play begins on Saturday, July 24 at 2 p.m. Kings Mountain will play its first game If you love to play sports, the Kings Mountain. Recreation Department has a special deal for you. Recreation Director David Hancock announced today that baseball registration will be held at the Community Center February 15-27; and anyone who registers for baseball/softball, basketball and soccer at the same time will be giv- en a 20 percent discount on regis- tration fees. For all three sports, the normal registration fee would be $25 for inside city residents and Registration scheduled $37.50 for outside city residents, but with the discount inside city residents would pay only $20 and outside residents $30. According to Hancock, the fee would be paid at baseball/softball registration and would not cover costs for supplemental insurance. Hancock said that since baseball is the department's biggest sport, offering the registration discount would not only be a savings for parents but would save the recre- ation staff time in registering play- ers for other sports. Saturday at 8 p.m. The Recreation Department is seeking volunteers from the com- munity to help sell advertisements for programs, work the concession stands and gates, and help with other services. Anyone willing to help in any way may contact David Hancock or Denise Falls at the Community Center. "We hope this will truly be a The Scoreboard community effort," said Hancock. "The economic impact will be great because we will have nine teams coming here and every team will have 13 players with coaches, parents and other family members and friends needing a place to stay and other services offered by the town." In addition to lining up volun- teers to help plan the tournament, Hancock said the Recreation (Kings Mountain Boys Club Basketball League results. Hancock said the city will be utilizing five arca school fields this year for practice, including two at East, two at North and one at Central. The city is footing the bill of $475 for moving a backstop at East.
