CHAD From Page 1-A . “You don't realize that God doesn't promise tomorrow until a tragedy happens and you realize that every day is a miracle,” said the father. Chad's first surgery took four hours. Doctors implanted a tube from the crown of Chad's head to his stomach. The tube is used to drain spinal fluid. His second, a shunt procedure, took two hours. He is being fed through a tube from his nose to his stomach. He may face a third operation soon. Chad's teacher, Carla Bennett, has visited the boy several times and carried tapes of his classmates talking and playing. The boy moved his fingers. Although his eyes are open he doesn't focus on anything but we can tell that he's responding,” said the father. Tuesday the boy came off a res- pirator. "Chad is breathing very well now but he has a terrible sore throat," said the father. "We've had to face the tough facts that he has brain damage and we don't know how it will affect him but he's making some im- provement," said Baity." He's shown no sign of infection. All his vital organs are working fine." The Baitys have a daughter, Brooke, 3, who is staying with her aunt, Rene Carver. Mrs. Baity, who works at Bigger Brothers in Charlotte, and her hus- band arc staying at Mecklenburg Medical Auxiliary Endowment, 300 Hawthorne Lane, where they alternate, one rests while the other visits Chad every three hours for about 20 minutes. Baity says the support of family and friends, his church, West School and from folks he doesn't know, have helped them through the bad times. He wants other families to know that help is available through such organizations as MMAE to help families who live a distance from Carolinas Medical Center to be able to stay in a free, comfortable surroundings close by the hospital. He said the facility is only five minutes from the hospital. Chad, a patient in Pediatrics Intensive Care, may be moved to a private room the latter part of the week. Cards will reach him at the hospital or at 300 Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, 28204. Baity goes to the hospital about 6:30 a.m. every morning and stays until 10 p.m. at night. He says he's grateful that Dial Page has let him use a beeper so that he can walk freely through the hospital and on the grounds and still be able to find out about his son's progress at all times. "I've gone through so many emotions here at the hospital but I've never tried to find anybody to blame," said Baity. "This little man (Chad) is going to wake up and I'm just waiting and praying for that minute when he does." ACTION From Page 1-A Kings Mountain Hospital Administrator Huitt Reep says this information is vital but he said that in a dire emergency, and especially in a life-threatening situation when the patient is unconscious, the treatment will be done without parental consent. "Of course we keep on trying to contact the parent for the information," said Reep. A newsletter going out to par- ents of West School students will include a statement from Chad's parents about the importance of up- dating school information about a child. "One minute makes the dif- ference," said Baity. Doctors say Chad's condition is rare. They speculate that he may have been born missing a capillary in his brain, meaning an artery car- ries blood directly to a vein. Chad's recovery could take months. His father, who is self-em- ployed, and his mother, who works in Charlotte, plan to stay by his side. "Say a big thanks to Kings Mountain for their prayers and continue to pray for us," said the father. "Chad's eyes are open, we believe he is responding to familiar sounds and our little man is breathing on his own."
