ee —, Zalia "Zip" Sheppard Hardin, 90, has never traveled far from her hometown of Grover. Her family and roots are impor- tant to her, said the popular home- maker at her birthday party Sunday. She was honored by her grand- children at a reception from 3-5 p.m. at Grover Town Hall. A num- ber of friends called with best wishes for the former Grover School Cafeteria worker. Born in Grover on February 17, 1903 to the late Alex and Maggie Randall Sheppard, she graduated from Grover High School in 1922 and married the late Melvin C. Hardin in 1923. They have three children: Marjorie Field of Grover, Marvin L. Hardin of Newport Richey, Florida and Lola Faye Craig. of Florence, SC. There are seven grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren. During ‘World War II Mrs. Hardin was employed by U. S. Defense Plant in . GERTIE B. ROPER Gertie Ballard Roper, 82, of 514 Rhodes Ave., died February 10, 1993 at Kings Mountain Hospital. .A native of Cleveland County, she was the widow of Jasper Horace Roper and daughter of the late Frank and Laura Lawing Ballard. She was a retired textile employee and a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Surviving are one son, Derek Roper of Kings Mountain; one brother, Charles Ballard of Kings Mountain; four sisters, Eva George, Roberta Ellison, and Polly Ware, all of Kings Mountain, and Carrie Guyton of Great Falls, SC; two grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Friday at 3 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church. Rev. Patsy Stone and Rev. Dale Thornburg of- ficiated. M.C. HARDIN ‘Mrs. Hardin is 90 years old 7 iN ANG BN tN 7H Charlotte. For 14 years she was ‘the manager of the Grover School Cafeteria. After Mr. Hardin's death in 1963, she served on the staff of Presbyterian Children's Home in Barium Springs until her retire- ment. For several years she was the Grover correspondent for the Kings Mountain Herald and the Cleveland Times. She is a member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church in Grover. Members of her family attended church services with her on Sunday. Granddaughters Martha Craig of Columbia, SC and Rebecca Hinds of Myrtle Beach, SC presid- ed at the punch table. HAMRICK David R. Hamrick, 84, of 213 S. Roxford Rd., died February 15, 1993 at home. A native of Cleveland County, he was a retired hardware propri- etor, farmer and woodcraftsman. He was married to Helen Neal Hamrick and was son of the late Cleophas and Sallie Hoyle Hamrick. He was a member of Christian Freedom Baptist Church in Kings Mountain. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Brenda Gail Martin of Shelby and Norma Drewery of Kings Mountain; one brother, Ben Hamrick -of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Ava McGinnis of Boiling Springs and Pearl Beam of Charlotte; three grandchildren and one great-grand- child. The graveside service was con- ducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at El Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Rev. Sam Snyder and Rev. Joe Edwards officiated. A circus train cake with all the trimmings was served to guests. Guests were Josh's older broth- er, Daniel, Jessica England, Jennifer England, Christopher Ashlee Owens 3 years old Ashlee Denyse Owens celebrat- ed her third birthday with a party at her home February 13. She was three years old on February 11. A Barbie doll cake baked by Labrone Baliles was cut and served with refreshments. Ashlee has a sister, Kristina, who will be five March 11 and a brother Matthew, four months. They are the children of Jennifer and Dwayne Hord. Grandparents are Donald and Johanna Fite, ‘all of Kings Mountain. Jeremy Tucker three years old Jeremy Michael Tucker, son of Jerry Jr. and Andrea Tucker, cele- brated his third birthday February ~ 13. Friends and family were pre- sent at the party which was cen- tered around the 101 Dalmation theme. Jeremy is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Tucker and Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Pruette. Great-grandpar- ents are Mrs. Lillian Tucker and Mrs. Ola Pruette. Kalen Baliles is one year old Kalen Thomas Baliles celebrated his first birthday Sunday, January 24. iis Kalen's chair at his birthday par- ty was decorated with a dozen pas- tel colored balloons and he and his 18 guests enjoyed a rocking horse birthday cake with homemade vanilla ice cream and other party refreshments. Each guest was given a goodies bag for helping make his first birthday party celebration a special occasion, Kalen is the son of Kenny and Debbie Baliles of Roanoke, VA. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. James B. Surber and Mr. and Mrs. Paul T. Baliles, both families of Kings Mountain, and Edgar R. Sayers of Raleigh.
