WINKLER Dr. Joseph Garland Winkler, 87, pastor of Central United Methodist Church from 1941-48 and a former Superintendent of Greensboro and Marion Districts in the Western North Carolina United Methodist Conference, died February 21,1993 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. He was a native of Granite Falls, born October 5, 1905 to Poly T. and Mary Hartley Winkler. His wife, Kathryn Jones Winkler, died in September 1992. Winkler eamed degrees at Duke University and Emory School of Religion and received his Honorary DD degree from High Point University. He served in the Western North Carolina United Methodist Conference from 1930 until his re- tirement in 1971. For six years he had resided at The Methodist Home in Charlotte. His pastorates were Hiddenite and Cool Springs. Circuits; First Methodist Churches of Maiden, Hickory and Hendersonville, Central Methodist Churches, Kings Mountain and Asheboro; Trinity- Kannapolis District Superintendent of Marion and Greensboro Districts; and was interim pastor of Central Methodist Church in Mooresville. The memorial service was con- ducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Hickory. Memorials may be to First United Methodist Church, 313 3rd Avenue, N. E., Hickory, 28601. IDA HOUSER = Mrs. Ida Gray Long Houser, 93, died February 17, 1993 at Kings Mountain Hospital. A retired employee of Kings Mountain Hospital, she was a resi- dent of Kings Mountain Hospital Extended Care. A native of Gaston County, she was daughter of the late Robert W. and Ferrie Lee Hoffman Gray. She was the widow of Ben Long Sr. and Lloyd Houser. She was a mem- ber of Kings Mountain Baptist Church. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 155. Surviving are one brother, M. E. McKnight of Ocala, Fla. and two sisters, Elizabeth G. Bennett and Helen Lee Medlin, both of Charlotte; and four grandchildren. The graveside service was con- ducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery by Rev. J. C. Goare. FLOYD W. WHETSTINE Floyd Wray Whetstine, 47, of 308 El Bethel Road, died February 23, 1993 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. A native of Kings Mountain, he was married to Josephine Martinez Whetstine. He was son of the late Will and Beulah Wylie Whetstine. ‘He was a self-employed carpenter. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Jo Wray Whetstine and Rebecca Sue Whetstine, both of Kings Mountain; one brother, Johnny Whetstine of Kings Mountain; four sisters, Annie Mae Leigh, Inez Van Dyke, Margie Hurdt and Pauline Hurdt, all of Kings Mountain; and four grandchildren. He was a mem- ber of First Wesleyan Church.. The funeral will be conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. at First Wesleyan Church. Rev. Mark "Bardsley will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
