Students score high on state tests Grover School fourth graders and eighth graders at KM Middle School scored above the state aver- age on state writing tests given ear- lier in the year. Fourth and sixth graders scored below the state average of 2.5 or better. The results were reported by Jean Thrift to the Kings Mountain Board of Education Monday night. Thrift said eighth graders showed much improvement since they didn't do well on the same test when they were in sixth grade. "This shows an effort on the part of the kids and the teachers," said Supt. Dr. Bob McRae. "Forty two percent of the 8th grade scored a 3 on the writing test.” Both Thrift and Dr. Jane King said that teachers and administra- tors will assess why the students didn't do well in 4th and 6th grade testing and work on bringing the scores up at more staff develop- ment courses this fall. Ten percent of Kings Mountain 4th graders scored 2.5 or better on the focused holistic score where the possible score of 4.0 was at- tained by only .9 percent of stu- dents in North Carolina. On the analytic score Kings Mountain 4th graders were just be- low the state average, 68.8% to 69.7%; but on word usage, me- chanics and spelling Kings Mountain scored above the state average. Eighth graders moved up in scoring from 63 percent last year to 75 percent this year and ranked above the state average which was 57.9 percent of students who scored 2.5 or better on a possible score of 4.0. Kings Mountain was just under the state average, 5.3%, of students scoring 4.0. Kings Mountain's score was 4.9%. In sen- tence formation, KM scored above the state average.
