Businessman refutes claim on Grover store Grover businessman Bill Lail circulated a flyer this week in Grover and bought advertising in two local newspapers refuting claims by some citizens that a ma- jor grocery store isn't firmly com- mitted to build in Grover. Lail has said at several public meetings and repeated in the letter that " a vote against the beer and alcohol referendum means no gro- cery store for the town and no gro- cery store means that a bank isn't in the town's future." Lail, who lives outside Grover city limits, owns business property in the downtown area and in recent months has promoted the opening of several downtown businesses. He owns property near Town Hall for which he said negotiations are underway with a real estate devel- oper to bring a major chain grocery store to. town. Lail, in his letter, refutes claims by opponents that the pending elec- tion is -a moral or religious issue. He claims that property taxes on a full size grocery store alone would enhance the town's budget and em- ploy over 50 people. Weatherly challenges Hunt on fund control Representative John Weatherly, Republican from Kings Mountain, is challenging Governor Jim Hunt's creation of what he termed a "non- elected politically appointed corpo- ration” which would control $60 million in public funds for "chil- dren's initiative." Weatherly said he also objects to formation of a corporation not subject to open meetings, public records or state personnel laws. Weatherly, joining the House Republican Caucus Family and Children Policy Committee in a letter to Hunt, expressed serious concerns about the powers, mis- sion and governance of the private corporation. "We also have serious unre- solved concerns about the philoso- phy underlying the creation of a new--and perhaps less accountable- -bureaucracy in lieu of providing actual assistance to families and children," Weatherly said. "We are not here today to make a final judgment on the governor's proposal. We are honestly seeking answers to very troubling ques- tions, Despite all the rhetoric about helping children, real, practical and philosophical effects of the pro- posed legislation have not been thoroughly discussed or debated by the appropriate committees of the General Assembly," said Weatherly. "We are all for children. That is exactly why we cannot blindly vote for legislation that may actually do more harm than good just because the Governor calls it a "children's initiative." We are concerned about what is best for our children and their families--not politically popu- lar rhetoric." Weatherly called for the pro- posed legislation to be thoroughly discussed or debated in the General Assembly. Cause of woman's death still not known SBI investigators are still wait- ing for results of the autopsy that may finally determine the cause of death of Linda Jane Black, 23. Dan Crawford, a special agent of the State Bureau of Investigation, said the autopsy is taking much longer than expected due to the de- composition of the body. Family members out searching for Black found her partially de-¥ composed body lying face down in the woods off Van Dyke Road a week after they reported her miss- ing on May 7. Black's boyfriend, Keith Raymond Whitworth, of Gastonia, told police he and Black had gone into the woods off Farris Road on the afternoon of May 7 in search of marijuana plants. Whitworth said the two became separated in the woods. A search was called off after deputies and dogs from the Cleveland County Sheriff's Department and rescue and fire personnel failed to find the missing woman, Kings Mountain Weather Report (Compiled by Kenneth Kitzmiller) May 19-25 Year Ago Total precipitation 78 03 Maximum one day .38 (19th) .02 (20th) Year to date . 27.48 20.24 Minimum temperature 40 (20th) 43 (21st) Maximum temperature 82 (21st) 90 (23rd, 24th) Average temperature 63.6 68.6 Graduate to S {J M M E R FUN Berek Sweaters are arriving for fall!! 1013 Union Rd.
