AR 4 Awards Day held Friday at Grover School Grover School graduated 79 fifth grade students in a ceremony marked by pomp and pageantry Friday during an Awards Day program which also honored former Principal Jim Scruggs. At the conclusion of the program, Grover PTO co-presidents dedicated a portrait of Scruggs which will be placed in the school to honor the veter- an educator. "You don't want to sec a grown man cry, do you?" asked Scruggs, surprised by the presentation. Scruggs retired at the end of last school year after 36 years in education. Top awards went to eight students for highest average in academic area and other top awards were to the most improved students in the academic area and DAR Good Citizens of the Year. Most improved students in the aca- demic areas were: Crawford's and Wright's Class - Penny McDaniel, communication skills; Kathy Goode, math; Darrick Owens, science; and Karnez Roberts, social studies. Blalock's and Crocker's class - Tara Bowen, communication skills; Jonathan Payne, math; Philip Silaphet, science; and Terry Huffman, social studies. Highest average in academic areas: Crawford and Wright's class - Haley Gingles, communication skills; Ola Moore, math; Haley Gingles, science; and Josh Payne, social studies. Blalock and Crocker's class - Lakeisha McClain, communication skills; Wesley Caldwell, math; April Curry, science and David Littlejohn, social studies. Terry Huffman won the award as DAR Good Citizen of the Year. Principal Glenda O'Shields, secre- tary Shirley Valentine and teachers as- sisted in the presentations.
