Eighth grader Hiroki Nishiyama
won double awards in math and sci-
ence to lead a large number of trophy
and certificate winners at Friday's
Awards Day at Kings Mountain Middle
School.
Outstanding academic achievement
awards went to five 6th graders, six 7th
graders and six 8th graders.
High achievement awards went to
Justin Chan, math; Michael Jolly,
English, Richie Wells, social studies,
Alice Ann Howard, reading; and David
Lyons, Science; all sixth graders; Kyle
Tsui, math; Shelia Hamrick, English;
Emily Anthony and Josephine Chan,
social studies; Katy Rountree, reading
and Micheal Scott Wilson, science, all
7th graders; and Nishiyama and
Sharonda Adams, math, Holly
Mitchell, English, Allene Barron,social
studies; Talia Gangoo, reading; and
Nishiyama, science, all 8th graders.
The Colonel Frederick Hambright
DAR history medals went to Richard
Wayne Wells, 6th grade; Joshua
Kienlen, seventh grade; and Marcus
Smith, 8th grade. Bethany Jimson was
first runner up in eighth grade competi-
tion.
Student Council awards went to
Cory McCreary, 8th grade; Laddie
Phanthalack, 7th grade; and Katherine
Champion, 6th grade.
Talia Gangoo was presented the
Shelby Exchange Youth Citizenship
Award from Joe Roberts.
The Social Studies Woodmen of the
World Award from Lodge 519 was pre-
sented by J. D. Champion to Aleen
Barron.
Calvin Jones won the music award
and played a piano rendition.
Environmental Awareness awards
went to Jamie Eller, Charity Smith and
Lashonda Quinn.
Richard Payne won the "Someone
special" award given in the guidance
program.
"Special friends"awards were also
presented.
Volunteers and mentors were recog-
nized.
School faculty members recognized
for special honors were Amy Ross,
support person of the year; Melvina
Jackson, custodian of the year; Ann
Tria, food service employee of the
year; Diane Simpson, bus driver of the
year; and Richard Rupp, KMMS teach-
er of the Year who also won the dis-
trict-wide honor recently.
Assistant Principal Mary Accor pre-
sented a Principal of the Year award to
John Goforth and a test coordinator of
the year award to Melanie Ballard.
Teachers Bob Grigg, John Pettus
and Carolyn McGinnis were recog-
nized for perfect attendance. -
King Mountain Middle School stu-
dents dedicated the school yearbook to
Supt. Dr. Bob McRae who also assisted
in the awards program.
