Johnston, bestselling novelist of the American frontier, has created an ex- traordinary, sprawling saga of war, loss, and human struggle - the story of a lone frontiersman and his lifetime quest to restore his family and defeat his greatest enemy. King. Stephen. "Gerald's Game" (Viking, 1992). On a warm weekday in October, Jessie and Gerald Burlingame are alone in the bedroom of their Maine summer house, playing a game that is- n't listed in Hoyle". Kinsella, W.P. "Box (Ballantine Books. 1991). This is the best book in Kinsella's career, Set in the small town, ball ficld, bam and bedrooms of Alberta, Canada. and populated by some of the quirkiest, rowdiest, hottest-blooded folks in fic- tion, the novel paints a brilliantly com- ic, full-color picture of North American life in the 1940s. Socials” Krantz, Judith. "Scruples Two." (Crown Publishers, Inc, 1992). In 1978, Krantz burst upon the pub- lishing scene with "Scruples,” a novel that captured readers everywhere. Now in "Scruples Two." she continues the story of Billy Ikehorn, one.of contem- porary fiction's most intriguing wom- en. It begins the day after "Scruples” ends, the day on which Billy's husband, producer Vito Orsini, won the Oscar for Best Picture. "Scruples Two" gives us five more years in the luscious lives of the three people who run Scruples. the best fashion store in the country. Leonard, Elmore. "Rum Punch.” (Delacorte Press, 1992). Jackie Burke's future looks grim. She's been a flight attendant for 20 years and she's down to working for an island hopping airline the day she lands at Palm Beach International with 50 grand and is taken into custody. The Feds know Jackie works for a man . who sells machine guns to the bad guys, but they don't know his name. Jackie looks at her options. Then she meets Max Cherry. Lide, Mary. McCaffrey, Anne. "Damia” (G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1992). Unquestionably the most brilliant of the Gwyn Raven children, Damia is al- so the most independent. McMillan's new novel tells the story of four African American women who lean on each other while waiting to ex- hale, waiting for that man who will take their breath away. Through their complex friendship, the author gives us her most honest and searing work yet - a poignant and fiercely accurate por- trait of modern female camaraderie. May, Julian. "Blood Trillium" (Bantom Books, 1992). This new novel continues the richly woven saga of magic and power creat- ed by the author of fantasy's most bril- liant mind. It is the stuff of which fairy tales are made, but this one is definite- ly for adults. Ike, Janette. "The Measure of a Heart." (Bethany House Publishers, 1992). Anna Trent felt fortunate to finish the eighth grade with first class honors. Already past her 16th birthday, most girls her age had been forced to drop out to help at home. She loved school, but now that is over. The oldest child in a farming family with six younger brothers, Anna is shy, sensitive, and self conscious. But when Aton Burke comes to the church to fill the pastorate for the summer months, the young seminarian is captivated by Anna's ad- mirable qualities. Peters, Elizabeth. "The Snake, The Crocodile and The Dog." (Warner Books, 1992). This new novel is one of the uncom- promising pleasures in life. Peters’ wonderfully witty voice and her penchent for history lessons of the Nile both ancient and modern keep her high adventure moving. Now in this seventh mystery, the Emerson-Peabodys are traveling up the Nile once again to en- counter the most deadly adversary, the Master Criminal, who is back at her sinister best. Pinckney, Darryl. "High Cotton." (Farrar Straus Giroux, 1992). What is blackness? Is it an enduring legacy based on the truth of struggle, handed down from generation to gen- eration? Or is it socially defined and hence ever changing? The unnamed narrator of Pinckney's pointed, hilari- ous and provocative novel raises these existential questions again and again as he searches for an authentic model for being himself. Plaidy, Jean. "The Scarlet Cloak." (G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1992). In th years 1572-1578, when the faith and fanaticism of one man, King Philip II of Spain, troubles the whole of Europe, His mOst Catholic Majesty's plans against accused heretics meet with stubborn, angry re- sistance. It is a period when the clash of ideals breeds great courage and stoutly adventurous spirits, a time that will test the mettle of the two brothers, and the Protestant woman they have come to love. Pohl, Fredrick. "Mining the Oort." (Ballantine Books, 1992). Mars was harsh, arid and unforgiv- ing, but for Dehkr De Woe and thou- sands of others, it was home. And the future of the colony was as bright as the great comet that hung in the Martian sky. Far out beyond the orbit of Pluto, miners were harnessing the vast potential locked in their icy bodies and setting them on a long journey to Mars where they would be used to bring water, air, and life to the barron colony. Price, Reynolds. "Blue Calhoun.” " (Atheneum, 1992). In this new novel, Price has written the most searching, most passionate, most accomplished book of his long, rich, and varied career. As the book opens Blue is compelled to examine his past from the mid 1950s to the pre- sent. As he recounts the years and their events for us, feverently, tenderly, knowing full well his own deep re- * sponsibility, we are made witness to a story of classic dimensions, a story of live and suffering, family and relation- ships, death and redemption. Roosevelt, Elliott. "Murder in the Red Room." (St. Martin's Press, 1992). 1937 was an eventful year in America, as FDR was inaugurated for his second term, the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys were ravaged by floods, and Amelia Earhart disap- peared over the Pacific. Amid all these historic events, a murder poses this country's greatest threat, and presents Eleanor Roosevelt with what may be her most challenging case yet.
