Obituaries Page 2A-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thursday, August 12, 1993 MRS. FRED W. PLONK Ferguson Rhodes Plonk, 83, of 906 Crescent Circle, widow of Fred W. Plonk, died August 6, 1993 at Wesley Nursing Home irf Charlotte. She had resided at the Methodist Home in Charlotte since 1991. She suffered a cercbral hem- orrhage in June. Born in 1909 in Bessemer City. to Caleb Junius and Susan Fulla Rhodes, she graduated from Woman's College, now UNC- Greensboro, and taught school in Cramerton. She married Fred W. Plonk and they lived in Louisville, KY for several years before return- ing to Kings Mountain in 1936 She and her husband were founding members of Resurrection Lutheran Church. Surviving are three sons, David T. Plonk and Dr. James W. Plonk of Charlotte and Robert R. Plonk of Atlanta, Ga; one daughter, Susan P. Key of Atlanta; 10 grandchil- dren, Terri Byers of Shelby, Steve Plonk of Newport Richey, FL, Chad and Chris Plonk of Kings ~Mountain, Timothy and Heather A native of Winston-Salem, he was retired chairman of the Johnson C. Smith University Department of Education, where he also scrved as an instructor. He was _ a former principal of old Camp High School in Cleveland County. He attended Shelby public schools and received his bachelor of arts degree from Johnson C. Smith University. He received his master of arts and doctorate degrees from New York University in New York City. A member of Alpha Kappa Sigma and Delta Phi Delta hon- orary societies, he was also a mem- ber of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. A musician, he was a poet and an artist. He exhibited several wa- tercolor and oil paintings at the Wachovia Bank Spring Art Show and at Central Piedmont Community College. He won sev- eral awards as a pianist and duo pi- anist. Survivors are his wife, Margaret; stepson, Edgar Wilson Jr. of Randallstown, Md.; stepdaughter, Mrs. Marguerite Jordan of Plonk of Charlotte, Audrey” amd— Chesapeake, VA; and his aunt, Julie Plonk and Ellen and John Key of Atlanta; one great-grand- child, Brock Byers of Shelby; and one sister, Isabelle Moore of Rutherfordton. The memorial service was con- ducted Saturday at 3,p.m. at Resurrection Lutheran Church by Rev. John Futterer. CHARLOTTE - Dr. Riley Rufus Cabiness Jr., 80, of 4140 Hyde Park Dr., died August 6, 1993 in Kings Mountain, GRINDSTAFF From Page 1-A member of Fairview Lodge 339 AF&AM, Oasis Temple and Macedonia Baptist Church. In his filing statement Grindstaff said, "I have followed local politics and city business for several years and want to offer myself as a can- didate for Ward 3 Commissioner in order to be a voice for all the citi- : zens of Kings Mountain. I will work hard for all the citizens of our city to make Kings Mountain a bet- ter and safer place to live and work. I will look at each issue in a fair manner and with an open mind, always having the best inter- est of our citizens at heart. The on- ly promise I will make to the citi- zens is I will stand up for what I believe in and push for the better- ment of the community." Voters will go to the polls .on October 5 in the municipal election to elect four councilmen to four- year terms. If a runoff is necessary, it would be held November 2, same time as the Board of Education election. At-Large - Kyle Smith, Jerry Mullinax, Frank Brackett and Dean Spears. ; HB Belmont Abbey College has received a $50,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The grant is designat- ed to support the Belmont Peninsula Projet. o Mrs. Daeira Roberts of Shelby. The funeral. was conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Memorial Presbyterian Church where he was a member. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery. MARY DAVIS FIPPS Mary Davis Fipps, 88, of 830 First St., died August 10, 1993 at home. A native of Bluejay, West Virginia, she was a homemaker and widow of Ben Bennett and Ed Fipps. She was daughter of the late Roe and Mattie Davis. . Surviving are one son, Joe Bennett of Spencer Mountain; two daughters, Sue Bennett Davis of Cherryville and Nellene Ruth Davis of Catawba, SC; two sisters, Lillic Ford and Maggic Hullender of Kings Mountain; and three grandchildren. The funcral will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at Harris Chapel. Rev. Eugene Land will of- ficiatc. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. MARK COLE PALERMO BILOXI, MS - Mark Cole Palermo, 30, of 353 Greenwood Dr., died August 8, 1993 at 7:30 a.m. in Gulfport Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Weisbaden, Germany, son of Edmond Keith Almond of Biloxi and Paula Cole Palermo of Hampton, VA. He was married to Deborah Crockett Palermo. He was employed as a riveter for Anderson Construction Company. He was a member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church in Hampton, VA. Surviving, in addition to his wife and parents, are his stepfather, Vincent Palermo of Hampton; pa- ternal grandfather, Ed Almond Sr. - ‘of Gaffney, SC; maternal grandpar- ents, Paul and Jean Cole of Shelby; one half-brother, Barry Almond of Chattanooga, TN; and one sister, Amber Marie Smith of Kodiak, Alaska. The funeral will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at Harris Chapel by Rev. Jim Brackett. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. RUTH GRAY EARLY Ruth Gray Early, 54, of 411 Cherokee St., died August 10, 1993 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital in Shelby. ! A native of Cleveland County, she was a homemaker and wife of Charles Early. She was the daugh- ter of the late Pierce and Foy Conner Gray. Captain Bob Hayes reminds that safety seats and seat belts can re- duce deaths and serious injuries in accidents by over half. North Carolina law requires children up to age three toride ina _ safety seat or, booster seat. Children age three up to age six must ride in a safety seat, booster seat or seat belt. All drivers and front seat passengers must ride buckled up. Hayes said that to give protec- tion, seat belts must be as snug as possible. Lap belts must be low across the upper thighs, not on the soft tammy. Shoulder belts must be across the shoulder and chest. Do the arm to move it off the neck. Instead move the child toward the center of the car to get a better fit. Survivors are one son, William Schoener; one grandson; and one granddaughter. The funeral was conducted July 26 at Family Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Queen of Peace Cemetery. : HOLLAND GANTT Holland Eugene Gantt, 46, of 107 Bright Ave., Bessemer City, died August 6, 1993 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. A native of Kings Mountain, he was son of the late Paris Jewel and Mary Elizabeth Lail Gantt. He was married to Linda Johnson Gantt. ‘He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and employed by Wales Fabric in Gastonia. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are one son, Todd Eugene Gantt of Kings Mountain; one daughter, Amanda Elizabeth Gantt of the home; two sisters, Patricia Carroll and Shirley Mullinax, both of Kings Mountain; and one grand- child.
