Kings Mountain High basketball coach Larry Sipe always dreamed of coaching in all-star games, His dream will come true next July 19 when he assists veteran Concord High coach Bo Brickles with the West team in the annual East-West All- Star Game at the new Greensboro Coliseum. : : T hie SIPE North Carolina High School Athletic Association informed thé\coaches of their se- lection last week. "How. 1ronic!" Sipe thought FOOTBALL From Page 1-B Junior defensive back Rodney Brown tacked on the final two touchdowns in the fourth quarter - one on a 26-yard return of a fumble and the other on a 56-yard punt re- turn on which he took a reverse hand-off from Kevin Melton. Coach Hicks said he was pleased overall with the Mountaineers' per- «formance, but added that several | ‘areas of the Mountaineers! game needs improvement. : "We were pretty well pleased with the kicking game,” he said. “The execution by all of our play- ers - both the coverage people and the return people - was exceptional for this early in the season. There are a lot of things we can do better, but to be that far along was good. "Defensively, I thought our kids played real sound team defense. We had a lot of people around the football and that's always good. As long as you're getting that done you can get better at reads and techniques. We showed a strong desire to want to get to the football. "The night I got the call that I was to be the West assistant, I told my wife, Brenda, that I hoped the head coach would be somebody I could learn something from," Sipe said. "It said, 'wouldn't it be funny if it were Bo Brickles?' " Brickles and Sipe have sat across the gym from each other on numerous occasions, the most no- table in the Western North Carolina championship game in Hickory in 1990 when Sipe's Mountaineers knocked off the top-ranked Spiders to earn a trip to Chapel Hill for the state 3-A championship. "I think everybody remembers - pleased but we felt like we weren't as far along as we thought we would be. A couple of times we had the ball in scoring position and had some breakdowns, but we're an option football team and we de- pend on our linemen to do a lot of reading and picking up assign- ments to get the quarterback and tailback on the outside third of the field. A couple of times we didn't even get past the tackles, but that will take sometime." ..... .... ° The Mountaineers got outstand- ing defensive play from Bron Smart, Jahi Smart, Sheldon Smith, David Merck, David Owenby, Kenny Bridges, Rodney Brown and Kevin Melton; and excellent blocking from Travis Smith, Jody Putnam, Norris McCleary and Cedric Moore. BM The Mountaineers face a much tougher test Friday night when they travel to Crest to take on a much-improved Charger eleven. Crest is fresh from a 13-12 vic- torv over its arch-rival, Burns, and Sipe to coach in East-West game _ that game," said Sipe. "I'm really looking forward to coaching with him. He's already been in touch with me and we'll be going to the Camcorders Skyline all-star camp in High Point Sept. 25 to look at some players." : Sipe, who has been in coaching for 24 years and has a 169-95 record in 10 years at KMHS, has turned out one conference champi- on, one conferfence tournament champion, and three Sectional champions here. "Being selected to coach in the East-West game is quite an honor, but it's a result of all those good basketball palyers that I've had here these last 10 years," Sipe said. "You get recognition by having good athletes." is regarded as a serious contender for the Northwestern 4-A Conference championship. While Kings Mountain's defense was outstanding against East Gaston's running game, its pass de- fense was not seriously tested. That won't be the case this week, though, because Crest is one of the top throwing teams in the area. "They have a wide open attack," said Coach Hicks. "Their quarter- back (D!Andre Hopper) has alot of ability. They get in a one-back set, or run and shoot, and throw the ball about 90 percent of the time. We'll be looking for at least four wide receivers on every snap of the football." Defensively, Hicks said the Chargers line up ina 50 defense, but do a lot of stunting and try to * create confusion for the opponent's offense. "Their whole defense is geared to get penetration, and we're an option football team. That's not a real good match-up for us, but if we're going to be successful we're going to have to take care of it."
