Patrol will be out in force With the. increased traffic ex- pected on the highways during the upcoming Labor Day holiday, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol will be out in force, as usual, to assist motorists with safe travel, according to Colonel R.A. Barefoot, Commander of the State Highway Patrol. Additional emphasis will be placed. on all areas of enforcement, with vigorous pursuit of the im- paired driver the top priority. The Labor Day holiday weekend period begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, September 3, and ends at midnight on Monday, September 6. Gold St., reported theft of a $700 in Mark Tool air impact wrench from City Garage. Steven Ledford , Clint Hill Church Road, Boiling Springs, reported that while employees were in the break room at 414 Scotland Drive that some- one placed bread in a microwave oven and caused a fire. Anthony Philips, Camilla Dr., Gaffney, SC, reported that his 1992 Plymouth was struck by a hit and run driver at 610 E. King Street. Four residents reported that their - cars were broken into at Friday night's football game and police arrested a suspect. Cars belonging to Vernon Stowe, 929 Cloverhill Dr., Gastonia, James Goad, 111 Watterson Road, Aaron Clark, Box 427, Grover, and Rene Jackson, 129 Ark St., were bro- ken into and vandalized. Speakers, a power booster and a eyeglass case were taken from the Stowe 1984 Chevrolet on Maner Road. Goad said his 1989 Ford was damaged. Clark said a passenger window was broken out on his 1986 Chevrolet and a CD case re- moved. Jackson reported theft of tapes and sunglasses from a 1993 Chevrolet. AUGUST 23 A’ hit and run accident occurred in the Harris Teeter parking lot involving a 1994 car owned by Roger Wayne Cobb, 1135 Rollingbrook Rd. Ptl Bob Myers estimated damages at $490. AUGUST 25 : A parked 1986 Buick at Harris- Teeter parking lot was struck by a hit and run driver. The 1986 Buick, dam- aged $250, is owned by Hazeline Burris Abernathy, 21 N. Hedrick St., according to Ptl. R. W. Thomas. AUGUST 27 A vehicle owned by Roger Anthony Philips, 112 Camilla Circle, Gaffney, © SC, was damaged $700 by a hit and run driver. The accident occurred in the parking lot at Harris Teeter. AUGUST 28 James Carroll Wiggins, 706 Bethlehem Rd, told officers that a bug _got in his eye, resulting in a rear-end collision involving his 1981 Datsun and a 1989 Jeep operated by Timothy Gardner, Williams St. Damages to the Wiggins car were estimated at $200. A 1988 Eagle operated by Andrea Falls, Mike Ledford Road, struck a 1990 Buick operated by Kim Nash, Chester, SC, doing a total of $7000 damage. The accident happened at the intersection of West Mountain and S. Sims Street when Falls was pulling from Sims onto Mountain. Free business counseling set in September in Shelby The Small Business and Technology Development Center at Western Carolina University's Center for Improving Mountain Living will offer free business counseling sessions in Shelby on Wednesdays, Sept. 15 and 29. The sessions will be held at the Chamber of Commerce. The Sept. 15 session will be from 1-4 p.m. and the Sept. 29 session will be from 9 a.m.-12 noon. Call 487- 8521 for an appointment. The sessions involve one-to-one counseling with an experienced ‘counselor familiar with small busi- ness operations and problems. The one-hour sessions are confidential and open to individuals who oper- ate existing businesses or those in- terested in starting a small busi- ness. Services provided include start-up counseling, 2< stance in preparing business ©. financial plans to support loan applications, marketing surveys, patent search and product feasibility assessment.
