She is a varsity cheerleader and a member of the girls swim team at Shelby . High and is active in Central United Methodist Church in Shelby, Carolina Cross Connection and Images Dance Troupe. Aiken, who ranks 10 in a class of 274 at Crest Senior High, won the Cleveland County Schools’ aca- demic achievement award and was Concert planned at KMHS The annual Christmas concert by the Kings Mountain High School Choral Department will be held Thursday, Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at B.N. Barnes Auditorium, There is a $2 admission fee. Proceeds will be used to help with the chorus's spring Florida trip. Director Eugene Bumgardner said the Choral Department has been working hard at preparing a repertoire of songs for the annual concert. Each year the Ensemble, Chorale and Kings Revue help bring Christmas joy to the commu- nity through the concert. Bumgardner's assistant Chorus director is Mrs. Sherry Young. "If you enjoy beautiful as well as entertaining music, you will cer- tainly want to attend this concert," Bumgardner said. "We encourage the public to come out and show its support for a very hard working and talented group of students." KM, UNC-CH students i in Macy's parade Ashley Dover, Kimberly Hoyle, Jill Jimison and Robert Suber of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill marching band will perform in the 67th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. Dover lives at 226 Long Branch Road, Hoyle at 405 Country Club Acres, Jimison at 602 Oak Grove Road and Suber at 1414 Merrimont Avenue, all in Kings Mountain. The UNC-CH band is the sole collegiate group performing in the Nov. 25 parade, which features floats, giant balloons and 100 clowns. The parade marches from Central Park West and 77th Street along Broadway to 34th Street and passes an estimated two million people who line the streets. About 35 million television viewers worldwide are expected to watch the parade, which NBC-TV will air from 9 a.m.-12 noon. The Tar Heels will be joined by nine high school and three novelty bands. "The band program is a ma- jor part of the parade, the regional component" that shows community spirit, said John McCann, who co- ordinates a team of Macy's em- ployees who work year-round on the parade. "We look for a nice cross section of the country." * Since the Carolinas typically produce some of the nation's strongest bands, competition is es- pecially stiff to be the single group representing the region, he said. UNC-CH's audition videotape stood out in a crowd of about 200 high school and college bands. "The band happened to be just in- credible," McCann said. "We saw these really exciting patterns and maneuvers, a real sophistication." Judges also noticed a great deal of polish and a ‘crisp marching and maneuvering style." UNC-CH's 300-student march- ing band is grateful for the oppor- tunity to march in the parade, said Dr. James W. Hile, director. Carolina's selection is "a step for- ward...(that helps) establish this band as one of the best in the coun- try." The Tar Heels, their uniforms and the Bicentennial Observance - marking Carolina's 200th anniver- sary as the nation's first public uni- versity -+also helped communicate the "local, regional, all-American style" that the Macy's parade | stands for, McCann said. a participant in Cleveland County Young Woman of the Year. She is active in Business Leaders of America and Health Occupations Students of America and is a mem- ber of the youth choir of Ebenezer Baptist Association. She plans to major in pre-medicine at UNC in Chapel Hill. Carpenter likes to work with un- derprivileged children and is active in her church youth group and Key club. She plays French horn and likes to read and spend time with friends. She plans to attend UNC at Chapel Hill and major in psycholo- gy/psychiatry. At Burns High, she is senior class representative in band and school representative for the Amy Charles Writing awards. 73% >” GROUND FRESH EN b PER A LY T AL RC ie 9 , “ip he DILLER \ a] .
