Family may take Billy's case to court A two-hour hearing in Raleigh before the Department of Human Resources last Friday was "disap- pointing," says the Kings Mountain grandmother seeking around-the- clock medical help for her three- year-old terminally ill grandson, Billy Bridges. Helen and Clarence Burnette were told by a pediatrician and of- ficials with Medicare that they will let them know within 10 days if the around-the-clock nursing care at home will continue. "It was really like a kangaroo court," said Mrs. Bridges, a nurse at Kings Mountain Hospital. "We were told by one doctor that we are all terminally ill, that no one is promised tomorrow," said Mrs. Bridges who came home Friday night at 10 p.m. and imme- diately started contacting local leg- islators. "Billy's doctors tell us to get a lawyer," says Helen. "We plan to doit." Over 200 letters from local peo- ple urging the government agency to continue to pay for nurses at home for Billy were unopened, said Mrs. Barnette. "Billy had two good months in June and July and that's all the records they wanted to see," said Helen. Since their return home, the Barnettes have been flooded with calls from caring friends who have read stories about Billy in the newspapers and support the grand- parents’ decision to take Billy from the hospital and care for him in the comfort of their home. With in- creasing costs, the family finances are drained. "We took Billy into the hearing room but we doubt that did any good. He is still very tired from the long trip," said Mrs. Barnette.
