Obituaries Page 2A-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thursday, December 23, 1993 BESSIE PAULING MATTOX Bessie Pauling Mattox, 72, of 300 N. Watterson St., died December 18, 1993 at home. She was a member of Worldwide Church of God in Charlotte. Surviving are one son, Andrew Pauling of Winnsboro, SC; four daughters, Barbara M. Marshall of Los Angeles, CA, Ivry M. Hunter of Philadelphia, PA, Carolyn N. Boyd of Kings Mountain and Brenda M. Young of Laverock, PA.; one brother, Gordon Pauling of Winnsboro, SC; one sister, Marie Byrd of Philadelphia; eight grandchildren and two great-grand- children. The funeral was held at Nix Funeral Home in Philadelphia. Burial was in Beverly National Cemetery in New Jersey. : Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, Shelby, 28150. GENE TESSNEER GROVER - Gene Tessneer, 55, of 141 Blackburn Dr., died December 11, 1993 in Cleveland Memorial Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Roberta Tessneer Randle and Ray Tessneer. He was employed at Dicey Fabrics Inc. in the maintenance depart- ment. He was a member of Polkville Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gail Tessneer. Survivors include his wife, Faye Tessneer; his stepfather, Walter Randle of Shelby; one daughter and son-in-law, Genia Tessneer Moore and Marvin Moore of Grover; two brothers, Jerry Tessneer and Garry Tessneer, both of Shelby; and one sister, Mrs. Jane Morrow of Shelby. The funeral was held December 14 at Buffalo Baptist Church. Rev. Max Turner Jr. officiated. Burial was in New Buffalo Baptist Church Cemetery. JAMES FRIEDEL SPARTANBURG, SC - James Henry Friedel, 73, of 7718 Valley Falls Road, died December 13, 1993, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Hicksville, New York, he was the widower of Margaiel Tate Friedel and a son of the late Henry A. and Marie Petty Friedel. He was a member of Hayne Baptist. Church and the men's "Ready", Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Young at Heart senior's organiza- tion and Woodmen of the World. He was retired from Dellinger's Jewel Shop in Kings Mountain. He was a veteran of World War II and served with the 8th Air Force, 34th Bomb Group in England and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal. Surviving are one son, Bill Tate of Niceville, Florida; one brother, Francis Friedel of Smyrna, GA; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Saturday at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel in Spartanburg. Rev. Jerry Cook officiated. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg. Mountain St., died December 18, 1993 at Northern Hospital of Surry County. A native of Kings Mountain, bom March 24, 1935, she was the daughter of Maynard Lee and Mattie Hudgins Odell. She was employed by Amp, Inc. Surviving are her husband, Charles E. Gladden Sr.; two daugh- ters, Mrs. Pamela Roux of Virginia Beach, VA and Mrs. Susan McGarry of Westfield; one son, Charles E. Gladden Jr. of Kermersville; one sister, Mrs. Helen Smith of Kings Mountain; one brother, Wayne Odell of Kings Mountain; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. The funeral was held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Pierce Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Mt. Gur Cemetery. SPURGEON GREGORY Spurgeon Eugene Gregory, 62, of 815 Ellison St., died December 14, 1993 in the Emergency Room of Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Gaston County, he was a retired textile employee and supervisor in dyeing and was mar- ried to Sally Hullender Gregory. He attended First Wesleyan Church. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, Jerry Gregory ‘and Jeff Gregory of Kings Mountain and Mickey Gregory of Gastonia; three daughters, Pam Bumgardner, Wanda Biddix and Tina Dover, all of Kings Mountain; three brothers, W. T. Gregory of Kings Mountain and Ross Gregory Jr. and Floyd Gregory of Gastonia; two sisters, Helen Huntsinger of ‘Cherryville and Betty Sue Fisher of Kings Mountain; and 14 grandchil- dren. The funeral was conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at First Wesleyan Church. Rev. Mark Bardsley and Rev. Eugene Land officiated. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. HARRY RAY HOWELL SR. MONROE - Harry Ray Howell Sr., 67, of Elizabethan Gardens Rest Home, died December 15, 1993 in Union County Memorial Hospital. He was a self-employed carpet installer for 27 years and a native of York County, SC. He was for- merly employed by Northeast Tool in Charlotte. He was a member of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church in Matthews. He served in the Army Infantry during World War II and was stationed in Germany from 1944-47. He attended Bethany ARP Church in Clover. Surviving are two sons, Michael Howell of Matthews and H. Ray Howell Jr. of Kings Mountain; one daughter, Sherri Howell Pasour of Kings Mountain; one granddaugh- ter, Laura Lynn Howell of Kings Mountain; and two sisters, Emma Greene Price of Gastonia and Margaret Whitesides of Clover, SC. The funeral was conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church in Matthews. A graveside service was held at 1 p.m. Friday in Bethany ARP Church Cemetery in Clover, SC. A native of Alabama, she was widow of Rev. Francis Gehring. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Surviving are one son, George Frances Gehring of San Angelo, Texas; one daughter, Mary Louise Baker of Kings Mountain; two grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Monday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church. Dr. John Sloan officiated. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. SAMUEL STRICKLAND Samuel Thomas Strickland, 62, of 608 Mauney. Ave., died December 18, 1993 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was a native of Kings Mountain, son of the late Ernest and Violet Bullocks Strickland. He was a retired employee of Mauney Textiles and ‘a member of American Legion Post 155. Surviving are three sons, David Strickland of Kings Mountain and Thomas Strickland and Dennie Lee Strickland of Michigan; four sis- ters, Dorothy Pennington of “Charlotte, Frances Pennington and Peggy Jones of Kings Mountain and Betty Gantt of Hickory; and three grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Tuesday at Sisk-Butler Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Florence Aeirs. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. FUND From Page 1-A portion of the drive. "This is the largest goal for United Fund ever achieved in Kings Mountain and we are so proud of everyone who made it happen," said a jubilant Rhodes at a celebration luncheon at Holiday Inn. He said dedication and persis- tence to a task paid off and volun- teers worked hard to wrap up the campaign before the holidays. Norris said several industries of- fered incentive goals to employees who contributed their fair share of wages. She cited Parkdale Mills, which presented a color TV set in a drawing among employees. who gave their fair share to help others.
