A retired industrial engineer. he had worked iat. JP. Stevens Company for 35 years. He was a native of Cleveland County. hus- band ot Sally Horton Jones and son of the late Julius Troy Jones Sr. and Bunah Holland Jones. He was a member of Shelby's First Baptist Church, a member of Bassmasters and a past member of Parks and Recreation and Toastmasters of Cleveland County. He was a graduate of Boiling Springs Junior College and North Carolina State University. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Surviving, in addition to his wife. are one son, Julius Troy Jones 1H of Kings Mountain; two daughters, Mrs. Vista Jones Rainey of Salisbury and Elizabeth Reid Jones of Waco; two sisters, Mrs. Annie Ray Dodd and Mrs. Frances Clay of Shelby; three grandchil- dren, Jennifer Tiffany Jones, Candace Haley Craft and Austin Ryan Craft; two brothers-in-law, J. Warren Gamble and George W. Clay. Jr. of Shelby; his son-in-law, Michael Lynn Rainey; his daugh- ter-in-law, Karan Poole Jones; two nieces, Susan Ellis of Spartanburg and Ann Philbeck of Shelby; and tive nephews, Cole Mangrum and Mark Mangrum of Atlanta, Dr. George Clay III of Newton, David Dodd of Shelby and Bill Gamble of Lattimore. He was preceded in death by his sister, Aileen Jones Gamble and his brother-in-law, J. Fitzhugh Dodd. The funeral was conducted December 24 at 11 a.m. at Webb Chapel of Shelby's First Baptist Church. Dr. Gene Watterson offici- ated. Burial was in Shelby's Sunset Cemetery. ANNIE HARBIN : Annie Adell Fletcher Harbin, 95, of 814 Third St., died December 24, 1993 in Kings Mountain Hospital. She was widow of Elmer P. Harbin and daughter of the late Will and Janie Fletcher. She was a retired textile employee and a member of Second Baptist Church. Surviving are one daughter, Gladys A. Strange’ of Kings Mountain; one brotiier, Robert Eletcher of Gastonia; 12 grandchil- dren; 18 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren and six areat-great-great grandchildren. The funeral was conducted December 27 at 11 a.m. at Harris Chapel. Rev. James E. Williams and Rev. Eugene Land officiated. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. : LELA FE. WHETSTINE Lela Ford Whetstine, 87. 4A Kingswood Apt.. died December 27. 1993 in the Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Gaston County, she was wife of Otis P. Whetstine and daughter of the late Charlie and Della Mullinax Ford. She was a homemaker. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are five daughters, Maggie Lutz, Ethel Wells, Hazel Vesey and Wilma Miller, all of Kings Mountain, and Essie Mae Jackson of Gastonia; one son, Bill Whetstine of Bessemer City; one brother, Harvey Ford of Kings Mountain; 23 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 13 great- great grandchildren. ; The funeral was conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Sisk-Butler Chapel in Bessemer City by Rev. Gene Leigh Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. ANNIE HICKMAN GROVER - Annie Mae Byers Hickman, 81, of 222 Watterson Rd., died December 24, 1993 at Kings Mountain Hospital. Survivors include one son, Herbert Hickman of Seat Pleasant, Md.; two stepsons, Howard Degree of Rutherfordton and Gus Degree of Atlanta, Ga; two daughters, Nina Martin of Washington, DC and Elaine Hickman of the home; six grandchildren; six step-grand- children; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. at Shiloh AME Zion Church by Rev. Roosevelt Kelly. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 2-3 p.m. at Shiloh AME Zion Church. ' FREDDY D. TIDWELL GASTONIA - Freddy Douglas Tidwell, 52, of 5311 South New Hope Road, died of a massive heart attack December 21, 1993 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. A native of Gastonia, he was the son of William C. "Bill" Tidwell of Gastonia and the late Vida Huffstetler Tidwell. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and. The Screen Actor's Guild. He was vice presi- dent of Old South Fragrance Company. In addition to his father, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Eddie Ross of Asheboro, formerly of Kings Mountain; two nieces, Donna E. Ross and Melissa R. Harrison of Asheboro; and a nephew, Chip Ross of Asheboro. A graveside service was con- ducted by the Revs. Joe Lawing and Linwood Lavender December 23 at 3 p.m. at Gaston Memorial Park. Cleveland County gets grant for arts program A $11,000 grant for arts program development in Cleveland County was announced this week by Governor Jim Hunt and Cultural Resources Secretary Betty Ray McCain. Grant recipients must complete funded projects by June 30, 1994, and the North Carolina Arts Council requires them to match these awards dollar-for-dollar. The local grant will include $6,000 to the Cleveland County Area Mental Health program for commissioning of a collaborative "earth work" landscape on the Mental Health campus; $1,000 to the Cleveland County Arts Council for general operating support in Kings Mountain; $2,000 to the Cleveland County Arts Council for general operating support in ‘ Cleveland County and $2,000 to the Cleveland County Arts Council for general operating support in Shelby.
