i NRT On the last day of the old year x ~~ Maney _ Superintendent Walt Ollis. the 170 employees of the City of Kings Mountain were thanked by their supervisors "for a bang up job «in '93" and service awards were * presented. Handing out the accolades and special awards at the fifth annual program at the Community Center were City Manager George Wood, Community Services Director Tom Howard, Public Works Supt. Karl ‘Moss, Utilities Director Jimmy and Water/Sewer Howard listed as one of the big accomplishments of the old year the installation of a septic tank hauling system. Howard said Kings Mountain is the only municipality in Cleveland County with a waste water treatment facility that can ac- cept waste from septic tank haulers. "Many people don't see the work we do until they have a problem, such as turning on a switch and no lights," said Howard. He said that the Public Works Department re- ceived 8,000 calls during 1993, processed, 5,000 work orders and poured 200 cubic yards of concrete and 704 tons of asphalt in addition to picking up tons of refuse and leaves and rebuilding engines in city vehicles. The Water-Sewer Department changed 250 taps and meters, treat- ed 1.6 billion gallons of water at the Waste Water Treatment Plant and kept 28 pump stations running during 1993. 4 Waste Water Treatment Plant employees put up 00 feet of handrails at the clarifiers and water tanks for improved safety and OS- HA came to town with a compli- mentary inspection to prevent pos- sible safety hazards. The Electric department put in 180 taps and 335 street security lights and completed 1200 work orders, replacing poles, wiring and transformers. The: transformers at Clevemont Mills were changed out during an extensive project. It was the year of the squirrels in Kings Mountain, as 200 squirrels played havoc with the utility poles. Tree-trimming paid off, said Howard. The Spectrum gas line was re- built and gas crews installed 225 gas taps. Gas lines went out Oak Grove Road, on Canterbury to the new Firestorie Mills and to the new Dye Tech plant. The gas depart- ment completed 1300 work orders. "We've pulled together in all de- partments,’ said Howard. Wood said that employees pro- vided day in and day out services to citizens. He took the occasion to single = out the Sanitation Department. Wood said that the city had zero complaints after Christoaas when the activity in the Sanitation Department is heaviest. Public Works employees hon- ored for service were: Tom Howard, certificate of apprecia- tion; George Wood, Eagle award, a special award from Karl Moss; CHAMPS From Page 14-A Pr Ted forfeit; 112 - Steven Lemmons (KM) WBF; 119 - Ian Jones (S) p.
