GEORGE M. GOFORTH
BLACKSBURG, SC - George
Martin Goforth, 75, of 742 Antioch
Road, died January 3, 1994, in
White Oak Manor in Shelby.
A native of Rutherford County,
he was born August 12, 1918. He
was the son of the late George
Edward and Elizabeth Pannell
Goforth. He retired as Principal of
Blacksburg High School in 1978.
A graduate of North Carolina
State University, he earned his
Master's of Education from the
University of South Carolina. He
was a member of St. John's United
Methodist Church, South Carolina
Educational Association, North
Carolina State Alumni Association
and the 4th Infantry "Ivy"
Association. He earned the rank of
Lt. Colonel while serving in the
United States Army during World
War II.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma
Beam Goforth; two sons, George
E. Goforth of Blacksburg and John
R. Goforth of Kings Mountain; two
daughters, Ann G. Rosi of
Chicago, Ill. and Jean G. Peach of
Gastonia; one sister, Zella G.
Sweezy of Kings Mountain; two
brothers, Joe A. Goforth and
Coleman W. Goforth, both of
Shelby; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral was held Wednesday
at 11 a.m. at St. John's United
Methodist Church. Rev. Elizabeth
Pratt George and Rev. Julian Lazar
officiated. Burial was in Beulah
United Methodist Church at Stoney
Point.
Pallbearers were Donald Beam,
Paul Goforth, James Sweezy, Jim
Leigh, Domino Rosi, Steve
Goforth, John Goforth and Freddy,
Wilkins.
Honorary pallbearers were T. D.
Wilkins Sr., Roy L. Byars, Charles
Love, C. C. Moorhead, Roy .
Young, Leonard Jones, Claude
Cobb, Anderson Hambright,
Charles Borders, Marshal Neal,
Hubert Adair and Phil Wilkerson.

MARY M. McABEE
Mary Mellon McAbee, 75, died
December 29, 1993 at Broughton
Hospital in Morganton.
A native of Gaston County, she
was widow of Barney Lee
McAbee. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are three sons,
Douglas Eaves of York, SC,
Howard Junior Nance of Shelby
and Jake G. Nance of High Shoals;
four daughters, Ollie Mae Nance,
Brenda K. Gore and Linda F. Orr,
all of Gastonia, and Betty Brackett
of Kings Mountain; one sister,
Rose Brackett of Kings Mountain;
and nine grandchildren.
The graveside service was con-
ducted Friday at 2 p.m. at Camp
Creek Baptist Church Cemetery by
Rev. H. E Tutherow.

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Patsy B.
O'Donoghue, 65, of Charlotte died
Wednesday, December 29, 1993 at
Carolinas Medical Center.
A native of Belmont, Mrs.
O'Donoghue was a Continental
Management Consultants adminis-
trative assistant and a Sacred Heart
College graduate.
She is survived by her husband,
Richard; sons, Michael
O'Donoghue of Wilmington, DE
and Stephen O'Donoghue and
William O'Donoghue of Charlotte;
daughters, Mrs. Deborah Baltz of
Raleigh, Mrs. Patrice O'Donoghue-
Eastland of Pointblank, TX, Ms.
Pamela O'Donoghue of Arlington,
VA and Mrs. Mary Andujar of
Charlotte; brother, Reginald
Ballard of Winston-Salem; sister,
Mrs. Daphne Cammer of
Cherryville; and nine grandchil-
dren.

Republican David Balmer, 31, of
Charlotte, continues to aggressive-
ly pursue the 9th District U. S.
House seat being vacated by
Congressman Alex McMillan.
Balmer was lining up support in
Kings Mountain Friday, as he met
with local GOP leaders. The 9th
District also includes Kings
Mountain in Cleveland County.
To a finance committee already
top-heavy with big-name business
leaders, Balmer also added Ray
McKenney of McKenney
Chevrolet of Kings Mountain, John
Fraley Jr. of Carolina Freight in
Cherryville and Duke Kimbrell of
Parkdale Mills.
Kings Mountain Mayor Scott
Neisler and Ole Country Store pro-
University Law School, graduating
in the top 20 percent of his class.
He served a clerkship in the North
Carolina Supreme Court and is a
Captain in the United States Army
N.C. National Guard. He is vice-
president and general counsel for
Bourne & Company. In 1989 as a
legislator he sponsored the Police
Officer Protection Act of 1989, a
bill passed by the legislature to al- group award, ranking six out of
low service of certain subpoenas 120 representatives.
