Area senior citizens invited
to sell items at flea market
Senior citizens 55 and older are
invited to sell their flea market
items at the Shelby Senior Center's
indoor flea market Friday,
February 4, from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
and Saturday, February 5, from 8
a.m.-2 p.m.
Call Tracy Davis at 482-3488 for
table reservations. Donated items
may be taken to the Center week
days from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Auditions slated
for 'Hello Dolly’
Auditions for the stage musical
"Hello Dolly" are scheduled for
Jan. 17-18 from 6-8:30 p.m. in
Dover Theatre on the campus of
Gardner-Webb University. The
production sis Feb. 23-March 1 in
Dover Theatre.
A variety of parts is available for
actors of all ages. Auditions are
open to individuals from through-
out the region as well as for stu-
dents, faculty and staff of G-W.
Copies of the script are on reserve
at the University Library and at
Cleveland Memorial Library in
. Shelby.
Performers wishing to audition
for a vocal role should have a se-
lection prepared for audition.
Selections do not have to come
from the musical. Tapes and/or ac-
companist will not be provided ex-
cept for songs from the play.

Auditions tonight
for Choral Society
Gaston Choral Society auditions
will be held at the First Associated
Reformed Presbyterian Church, lo-
cated at Chester and Third Streets
in Gastonia, Thursday between
65:45 and 7:15 p.m. All former
members are invited back.
Rehearsals begin at 7:30 and end
at 9:30. Rehearsals are scheduled
for each succeeding Thursday until
the first of May at the Presbyterian
Church. Dress rehearsal will be
May 2 and the spring concert will
be May 5 at Hunter Huss High
School.

Wildflower booklet
available to citizens
The North Carolina Department
of Transportation's Wildflowers on
North Carolina Roadsides booklet
is hot off the press and ready for
distribution.
The booklet contains 79 color
photographs of wildflowers you
might see as you travel North
Carolina highways. With each pho-
tograph is detailed information
about the wildflower, such as its
habitat, blooming period, water re-
quirements and other pertinent in-
formation.
Anyone who receives a booklet
can help pay for its cost and distri-
bution by making a donation.
Funds donated in excess of booklet
costs will be used to plant more
wildflowers along roadsides.

Senior Center
plans activities
The following activities have
been scheduled by the Cleveland
County Council on Aging. All ac-
tivities are at the Senior Center,
408 E. Marion St., Shelby, unless
otherwise indicated. For more in-

BM Winter Fest - January 27.
Games at 4 p.m., meal at 6 p.m,
followed by entertainer Avery
Henderson. $6 per person. All pro-
ceeds go to Senior. Games/Silver

is asked to take a covered dish.
Those who want one cooked for
them at a cost of $2 may call the
Center a day in advance. Cleveland
Memorial Hospital will present
"Emergency 911" and explain how
to stay calm and what to expect in
a life and death situation.
BM Pizza and movie day, Fri., Jan.
28, 12 noon. Pizza lunch is $2.50.
Movie, part II of "Around the
World in Eighty Days" starts at
12:45 and is free. Call ahead for

Heart Society
plans screening
The Heart Society of Gaston
County . will sponsor a
cholesterol/blood pressure screen-
ing at the Heart Society Office, 220
E. Franklin Blvd., January 26. The
cost is $5.

The Heart Society is offering a
glucose screening and blood pres-
sure screening January 27 at the
Heart Society office. The glucose
screening is $5 and the blood pres-
sure screening is free. The glucose
screening uses the finger prick
method and requires two hours of
fasting.
The screening will be from 10
a.m.-12 noon and 2-4 p.m. Call
864-1214 to schedule an appoint-
ment.
Grover Rescue
receives grant
Grover Rescue Squad will re-
ceive $13,380.42 from $855,915 in
service awards grants to be pre-
sented to 141 volunteer rescue
squads and fire departments which
provide rescue services across
North Carolina through the
Volunteer Rescue/Emergency
Medical Services Fund.
Funds will be used to purchase
emergency equipment. Funding de-
cisions are based on an assigned-
point system, such as population
distribution, age of equipment and
other objective criteria.
King birthday
celebration set
Dr. Julius Chambers, Chancellor
of North Carolina Central
University, will be keynote speaker
at the Gaston County Organization
For Community Concerns, Inc.'s
seventh annual celebration com-
memmorating the birthday of the
late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Saturday, Jan. 15 at 6 p.m. at
Friendship Baptist Church, 207
West Bradley Street, Gastonia.
Chambers, who was active in the
Civil Rights movement in the
1960s, is a native of Mt. Gilead.
