Honorary Chairman is Jim Rennirt, Eaton Plant Manager. Kristen Gillespie, 1994 Cleveland County WalkAmerica Ambassador, will help kick-off the ‘event. Residents are encouraged to form teams in their business orga- nizations and walk with Kristen, said Rennirt. Kristen, five-year-old daughter of Richard and Johanna Gillespie, is the first child ever to be named National Special Ambassador of the March of Dimes. The Shelby girl was recently one of four finalists for the National March of Dimes Ambassador posi- tion. Six-year-old twins Neil and Jacquelin Burch of Cincinnati, Ohio, were chosen. The Special Ambassador posi- tion was chosen for Kristen be- cause the March of Dimes has asked for the Gillespies' involve- ment with shaping the nation's health care reform initiative. Mrs. Gillespie has been asked by the March of Dimes to testify be- fore Congress in support of strong health care for all babies and preg- nant women. "At first I was disappointed that Kristen was not chosen as March of Dimes Ambassador," said Gillespie. "But this new position gives us the opportunity to do something even more important, to fight before Congress for low birth weight babies like Kristen, to be al- lowed the best of care." "Our chapter feels very good about the decision to name Kristen Special Ambassador," Rebecca Belk, of the Greater Piedmont Chapter of the March of Dimes. "This advocacy position will al- low the Gillespies to really make a difference for the future of America's babies and their rights to health care."
