Kings Mountain's Jarvis Bell tries to drive for some points in recent basketball game at KMHS gym. The Mountaineers end their regular season Friday at R-S Central. KM girls upset East Rutherford Kings Mountain's girls kept their hopes for a share of the Southwestern 3-A Conference reg- ular season title alive Tuesday night when they knocked off previ- ously unbeaten East Rutherford 59- 46 at the KMHS gym. The victory moves the Lady Mountaineers to within one game of the lead, but there's only one playing date left in the regular sea- son. In order to share the title, Kings Mountain must win its game at R-S Central Friday and East Rutherford must lose. Kings Mountain led the entire game Tuesday night as last year's conference player of the year Tameeka Anderson played one of her best all-round games of the year with 23 points. Kings Mountain jumped out to an early 18-5 lead only to see the hot-shooting Lady Cavaliers go on a 9-0 run to cut the margin to 18- 14. East went on another 7-0 run in the final two minutes of the first half to cut the halftime margin to 24-23. But the Lady Mountaineers kept their poise, and the lead. Coach Tony Leigh's ladies outscored East 12-8 in the third quarter to lead by five, 36-31, going into the fourth quarter. Kings Mountain had a well-bal- anced scoring attack, as did East Rutherford which scored a lot of its points from three-point range. Following Anderson with 23 for Kings Mountain were Heather Harrison with 12, Karen Queen nine, and Anita Whitaker eight. Leslie Spratt, Detreece Surratt and Jane Crotts scored 12 each for East Rutherford. Kings Mountain rebounded from its loss to Shelby Friday night by defeating North Gaston 52-22 at the KM gym. The KM ladies never trailed, leading by 12-5 after one quarter, 23-11 at intermission and 33-14 going into the fourth quarter. Anderson led the KM offense with 16 points and Queen added 10. In boys action, North Gaston jumped out to a 25-13 first quarter lead and went on to rout the Mountaineers, 75-47. Antonio Wallace scored 22, Scottie Ruff 14 and Robbie Joyner 12 for the Wildcats. Eric Tate led Kings Mountain with nine. TUESDAY GIRLS ER (46) - Spratt 12, Surratt 12, Crotts 12, Morgan 5, Allen 3, Morgan 2.
