Slide lecture planned
at Shelby Arts Council
The Cleveland County Arts
Council and the Shelby Art League
are co-sponsoring a slide lecture at
the Arts Council, 111 South
Washington Street, Shelby, on
Tuesday, march 15 at 7 p.m. The
presentation will be made by
Robert L. Decker, a Cleveland
County outreach volunteer for the
North Carolina Museum of Art.
His talk will focus on the exhibi-
tion "A Gift to America:
Masterpieces of European Painting
from the Samuel H. Kress
Collection," which will be on view
at the Museum through April 24.
The exhibition features 55 spec-
tacular 13th-19th century European
masterpieces by such distinguished
artists as Titian, El Greco, Rubens,
Van Dyck, Tiepolo, and man others
- paintings borrowed from 16 mu-
seums across the country and the
Louvre in Paris. More than 3,000
works of art were donated to 96
_ museums, universities, and other
institutions across the nation by
Samuel H. Kress, a self-made mil-
lionaire and avid art collector who
founded the S.H. Kress and Co.
five-and-dime stores.
In 1947, the North Carolina
General Assembly appropriated $1
million for the purchase of works
of art to establish a state art collec-
tion; this appropriation was contin-
gent on a matching gift from Kress,
who agreed to donate $1 million in
works of art. When handed over to
the Museum in 1960, Kress's gift
of 75 paintings and sculpture was
actually valued at more than $2
million. The Kress bequest togeth-
er with the works of art purchased
with the General Assembly's ap-
propriation make up the core of
what is today the finest art collec-
tion in the southeastern United
States.
The lectures are part of the
Museum's outreach program, made
possible by special funding from
the North Carolina General
Assembly. This funding enables
the Museum to take exhibitions
and programs to communities
around the state. For more infor-
mation about outreach programs,
contact Nancy Brantley, assistant
to the director of public programs,
North Carolina Museum of Art, at
(919) 833-1935.
Regional members of the N.C.
Museum of Art, members of the
Shelby Art League, and current
contributors of the Art Council will
be invited to the slide presentation.
There will be an informal reception
after the lecture. Due to space limi-
