engagement of their daughter, Kimberly Jane, to Eric Wade Spicer of
Kings Mountain.
The bride-to-be is the granddaughter of Mrs. Paul H. McGinnis of Kings
Mountain and the late Paul Hinkle McGinnis and Mr. and Mrs. Belvin
Lassiter Strickland of Dunn. She is a 1987 graduate of Kings Mountain
Senior High School and a 1991 graduate of the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is currently attending Mercer University
School of Law and will graduate in 1995.
The bridegroom-to-be is the son of Beuford Lee Spicer of Kings
Mountain and the late Gloria Bagwell Spicer. He is the grandson of Mrs.
Lois Carson Spicer and the late Willis Norwood Spicer and the late Mr.
and Mrs: Willis Bagwell. He is a 1982 graduate of Kings Mountain Senior
High School and a 1986 graduate of the University of North Carolina at
Charlotte. He is employed with T&W Textile in Clover, South Carolina.
A May 21 wedding is planned at Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Kings Mountain.

daughter, Melissa Lynn Hargrove, to William Ralph Carson, son of Mr.

Miss Hargrove is a graduate of North Gaston High's Extended Day
Program, where she was a Junior marshal, and Gaston College. She is em-

and is an Army veteran of six years active service with duty in Operation
Desert Storm. He is a member of the Army Reserves. He is employed by

Cleveland County begins immunization project
The Cleveland County Health
Department and McDonald's are
launching a joint effort to help see
that 90 percent of all children in
North Carolina are immunized by
the year 2000.
Dense Stallings, Health Director,
and Bill Sherwood, owner of
McDonald's of Cleveland County,
recently attended a meeting at the
Holiday Inn in Raleigh’ to hear
Governor Hunt's proposals. Hunt
affirmed the importance of partner-
ships between public agencies and
private businesses in the effort to
protect children from serious pre-
ventable childhood diseases. Hunt
recognized N.C. State basketball
coach Les Robinson for his partici-
pation and support in promoting
immunization. April 23-29 was set
as Pre-School Immunization Week.
Although there is much work to
be done before 90 percent of
Cleveland County children are im-
munized, Stallings said several
community-oriented programs
have already begun in the effort to
encourage parents to have their
children immunized.
In July of 1993, McDonald's and
the Health Department began a
program that was the first of its
kind in north Carolina. Ronald
McDonald came ‘to town and did a
magic show which focused on. im-
munizations. Tray liners which
highlight the need for immuniza-
tions were developed and are being
used in all Cleveland County
McDonald's. Also, parents are giv-
en a free food coupon from
McDonald's when they have their
child immunized on schedule. To
date, 878 milkshake coupons and
299 All-American meals have been
distributed. "I'd love to give away
2,000 All-American meals if if

Masons and the Health Department
are co-sponsoring a free immuniza-
tion clinic from 10 a.m. to 12 noon
at Fairview Masonic Lodge on
Landing Street in Kings Mountain.
In addition, the Kiwanis Club
has voiced an interest in becoming
involved with the campaign. Plans
are underway for Kiwanians to as-
sist in advertising as well as coor-
dinating outreach campaigns.
"The assistance of local civic
groups is very important to this ef-
fort and greatly enhances the ef-
forts of the Health Department and
private physicians who are immu-
nizing children," Stallings said.
"By continuing to work together as
a community, it is certain that we
will indeed reach our goal by the
year 2000."
Stallings said by the time a child
is two years old, he should have re-
ceived the following vaccinations:
BM 1 vaccination against red
measles, mumps, and rubella.
BM 4 vaccinations against diph-
theria, tetanus, and pertussis.
M 3 vaccinations against polio.
BM 3 vaccinations against hepati-
tis B.
BM 4 vaccinations against
Haemophilus influenzae, type b.
There is no charge for these
shots at local health departments,
community health centers and pri-
vate doctor's offices. There may be
an administration charge. at some
private doctor's offices.

Samuel, Hannah Dye
celebrate birthdays
Robert "Samuel" Dye and
Hannah Elizabeth Dye, son and
daughter of Barney and Debbie
Dye of Kings Mountain, celebrated
birthdays recently.
Samuel was one year old
February 14 and celebrated with a
party at his home. Guests attending
were his grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. Gene Dye; great-grandpar-
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Dixon; and
sisters, Lauren and Hannah Dye.
A teddy bear theme was used.
Cake and ice cream were served.
Hannah was three years old
January 25. She celebrated January
22 with a party at McDonald's.

Cameron Harris celebrated his
first birthday Saturday, March 5 at
Burger King.
