Kings Mountain High's boys swim team took third place in the final event of the day - the 400- yard relay - to edge Wake Forest Rolesville 161 to 157.5 and win their second straight state champi- onship Friday at Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill. The Mountaineers, who had fin- ished second to Brevard in the Western Regionals the week be- fore, came from a fourth seed to win the event in their first year un- der Coach Conrad Martin. Wake Forest Rolesville finished second, just as it did last year when Kings Mountain won the final event of the day - the 400 relay - while Rolesville finished fourth. This year, the Mountaineers were leading by a slim margin and needed a fourth place finish to nail down the crown in the event Rolesyille finished first. Salisbury finished third with 154 points: : Preliminary scores from the morning events placed the Mountaineers behind Wake Forest Rolesville, but the Mountaineers grabbed the lead with a good showing in the diving competition. Nathan Mayse led the KM effort with a second place in the 100 yard breaststroke and a third place finish in the 50 yard freestyle. In girls action, Kings Mountain placed 12th out.of 63 teams. It was the second straight 12th place fin- ish for the Lady Mountaineers. Hall of Fame banquet April 18 Jeff Mullins, head basketball coach at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, will be guest speaker at the seventh annual Kings Mountain Sports Hall of Fame Banquet Monday, April 18 at 7 p.m. at the Kings Mountain Community Center.
