KM swimmers state champions
As Yogi Berra might say, "it
looked like Deja Vu all over
again!"
Kings Mountain High's boys
swim team took third place in the
final event of the day - the 400-
yard relay - to edge Wake Forest
Rolesville 161 to 157.5 and win
their second straight state champi-
onship Friday at Koury Natatorium
in Chapel Hill.
The Mountaineers, who had fin-
ished second to Brevard in the
Western Regionals the week be-
fore, came from a fourth seed to
win the event in their first year un-
der Coach Conrad Martin.
Wake Forest Rolesville finished
second, just as it did last year when
Kings Mountain won the final
event of the day - the 400 relay -
while Rolesville finished fourth.
This year, the Mountaineers
were leading by a slim margin and
needed a fourth place finish to nail
down the crown in the event
Rolesyille finished first.
Salisbury finished third with 154
points: :
Preliminary scores from the
morning events placed the
Mountaineers behind Wake Forest
Rolesville, but the Mountaineers
grabbed the lead with a good
showing in the diving competition.
Nathan Mayse led the KM effort
with a second place in the 100 yard
breaststroke and a third place finish
in the 50 yard freestyle.
In girls action, Kings Mountain
placed 12th out.of 63 teams. It was
the second straight 12th place fin-
ish for the Lady Mountaineers.
Angela Bunzel placed in the top
three in two events and the girls
posted their best times of the sea-
son in all of their events but were

Hall of Fame banquet April 18

coach at the University of North
Carolina at Charlotte, will be guest
speaker at the seventh annual
Kings Mountain Sports Hall of
Fame Banquet Monday, April 18 at
7 p.m. at the Kings Mountain
Community Center.
Tickets will go on sale soon at
various locations. Tickets will also
be sotd-at the door.”
Mullins is a former first team
All-American and ACC Player of
the Year while playing for the
Duke Blue Devils. In his three-year
varsity career at Duke, the 6-4
guard scored 1888 points and
grabbed 767 rebounds in 86 games
and helped lead the Blue Devils to

John H. Moss will be inducted into
the Cleveland County FCA Sports
Hall of Fame Monday, March 21 at
7 p.m. at the Shelby High cafeteria.

Moss, a member of the Kings
Mountain Sports Hall of Fame, is a
long-time promoter of baseball and
is current president of the South
Atlantic League. Moss organized
the SAC and its forerunner, the
Western Carolinas League and has
a combined 35 years of service
with the Class A leagues. He was
elected to a lifetime contract in
1990.
Moss was general manager of
minor league baseball clubs for the
Detroit Tigers and was general

ances in 1963 and '64.
He was a first round draft choice
by the St. Louis Hawks in the 1964
NBA draft. He played 12 NBA
seasons, includingl0Q with the
Golden State Warriors. A member
of the Warriors' Hall of Fame, he
concluded his career in style by
helping Golden State to the 1975
world championship and a runner-
up finish in 76. He completed his
NBA career as a five-time all-NBA
pro with 13,017 points and a 16.2
career scoring average.
Mullins and his family relocated
in North Carolina and in 1977 he
was named Associate Athletic
Director at Duke. After a year in

so served as a color analyst for
ACC basketball for Jefferson-Pilot
Sports and Raycom Television.
Mullins took over as men's bas-
ketball coach and director of athlet-
ics at UNC Charlotte in 1985, and
in 1990 he was promoted to
Associate Vice Chancellor for
Public” “Service "and Men's
Basketball Coach.
He became the school's all-time
victory leader in 1991. He coached
the 49ers to the 1988 Sun Belt reg-
ular season and tournament titles
and the 1991 Metro tournament
crown. His 1991-92 team won
three tournament championships,
Professional Baseball League in
many capacities, including chair-
man, and has won numerous base-
ball awards from the local to pro-
fessional levels.
He served as mayor of Kings
Mountain for 22 years, during
which time he served on numerous
commissions in local, county and
staté government.
Moss is married to the former
Elaine Beilke of Wausau,
Wisconsin. They are members. of
St. Matthews Lutheran Church.

played Iowa State in the NCAA
East Regional, finishing with his
best mark ever at 23-9. Mullins
was cited by his peers as the 1988
Sun Belt Coach of the Year and
finished seventh in voting for
National Coach of the Year. He

Seaboard Coach of the Year by
