Page 2A-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thursday, March 24, 1994 Girl Scout Council banquet set Western District Superior Court Judge Julia Jones will be the speaker for the Pioneer Girl Scout Council's first Juliette Award ban- quet March 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Student Center of Cleveland Community College. A former Girl Scout who earned the Curved Bar, the equivalent of what is now called the Girl Scout Gold Award, Jones is a Shelby na- tive whose professional experience includes teaching and the practice of law. Nominees for the five awards are Anne Alexander, Dee Beasley, CARL W. PURVIS Carl Wilson Purvis, 51, of 113 Ada Street, Kings Mountain, died March 16, 1994 at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of York County, S.C, he was the son of the late Raymond and Gladys Crawford Purvis. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He is survived by three brothers, Richard Dean Purvis and James Lee Purvis of Kings Mountain, and Billy Ray Purvis of Grover. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Larry Gainey Friday at 2 p.m. at Harris Chapel. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. MILDRED R. WELLS SHELBY - Mildred R. Wells, 66, of 605 Smith Street, died March 18, 1994 at her home. A native of Kingsport, Tn., she was the daughter of the late Charlie Rose and Isabelle Collette Dingus, and wife of the late Robert Lee "Bob" Wells. She was a retired beautician and a member of new Buffalo Baptist Church of Grover. She is survived by a son, Harold "Skip" Wells of Shelby; a daughter, Mrs. Kathy Black of Shelby; two brothers, Jim Dingus and Don Dingus of Grover; a sister, Lou Blackwood of Shelby; four grand- children; and one great-great- grandchild. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Dale Angel Monday at 2 p.m. at New Buffalo Baptist Church. Burial was in Grover Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 201 W. Marion St., Shelby, NC 28150. ROGER DAVID McDANIEL GASTONIA - Roger David McDaniel, 61, died March 21, 1994. A native of Kings Mountain, he was the son of the late Ora David McDaniel. He was a graduate of Kings Mountain High School and a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He retired in 1969 as Chief Warrant Officer. An Eagle Scout, he had served as Scoutmaster of Troop 25 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of which he was a member. He was an instructor of Culinary Arts with Central Piedmont Community College for 14 years and taught at Huntersville Prison Rehabilitation Program. He was a volunteer at Schiele Museum of Natural History in Native American Cultures. He was an artist and sculptor. Survivors include his wife, Helga Donges McDaniel; two sons, Roger Georg McDaniel of Gastonia and David Henry McDaniel of Bessemer City; his mother, Mrs. Tennie Dixon Hoyle of Gastonia; one brother, Tom McDaniel of Rock Hill, SC; one sister, Mrs. Doris M. Plyler of Gastonia; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. The funeral will be conducted by Rev. Rammy Lybrand and Rev. Gregory Williams Thursday at 2 .p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Parish Life Center of the church and at the residence. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery in King Mountain. A native of Bessemer City, she was widow of Grady Carlyle Bridges. She was a homemaker and a member of Temple Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late James Lee and Florence Huffman Hope. Surviving are one son, Rev. Dean Bridges of Stockbridge, Ga.; one brother, Calvin Hope of Polkville; one sister, Eulala Hope Doby of Kings Mountain; two half sisters, Mae Stringfellow and Beatrice Stutts of Kings Mountain; two grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Harris Chapel. Rev. Robert Haynes offici- ated. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. GUINN WHISNANT MOORESBORO - Robert Guinn Whisnant, 82, of 104 Nesbitt Street, died March 16, 1994 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. Son of the late Charles and Brownie Hambright Whisnant, he was a native of Cleveland County and former resident of Kings Mountain. He was a U.S. Army veteran with service in Panama, and was a member of Sandy Run Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Vanda W. Whisnant of Mooresboro; two sons, Laurin C. Whisnant of Kings Mountain and Robert G. Whisnant Jr. of Albuquerque, New Mexico; a step- son, Phillip Nesbitt of Charlotte; two step-daughters, Patty Nesbitt of Raleigh and Wanda N. Davidson of Swannanoa; two brothers, Charles A. Whisnant and G. Wray Whisnant of Shelby; a sister, Jeannette Patterson of Kings Mountain; and four grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. ARRIE PHILLIPS Arrie Bell Short Phillips, 93, of 311 Stowe Acres, Kings Mountain, died March 21, 1994 at her home. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Joe Baxter and Hulda Pruitt Short, and wife of the late Pearly Bryson Phillips. She was a retired textile worker and a member of Corinth Primitive Baptist Church. She is survived by three sons, Roy Phillips and Coy Phillips of Kings Mountain and Alfred Phillips of Shelby; two daughters, Joann Phillips Dellinger of Kings Mountain and Dorothy Phillips Dellinger of Clover, S.C.; two brothers, Paul Short of Kings Mountain and J.B. Short of Clover, S.C.; three sisters, Verdie Bridges, Rosa Lee Anderson and Novella Foster of Kings Mountain; seven grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by the Revs. Mitchell Pruitt and Dale Thomburg Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
