{ Page 6A-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thursday, March 30, 1994 Four-run first inning lifts Shelby scored four runs in the top of the first inning and went on to defeat Kings Mountain 9-1 in Southwestern 3-A Conference baseball action Friday night at KM's Lancaster Field. The Mountaineers, 1-1 in the conference and 1-2 overall, return to action Friday night at home against South Point's Red Raiders. The Mountaineers and Raiders will meet again next Monday at 3 p.m. in the opening round of the Charlotte 'Observer Easter Tournament at Ashbrook High in Gastonia. Kings Mountain will play three games in the Easter event, and then take a break until Tuesday night, April 12 when they resume SWC action at Burns. Control problems again plagued Kings Mountain starter Robert Wingo, who dug himself an early grave and lost his second straight game Friday night. After a leadoff single by Jim Curtis, Wingo issued back-to-back walks to Jeremy Cox and Carlton Allen to load the bases. Wingo seemed to be overcoming his shaky start when he fanned Wes i Yas Dellinger for the first out of the game, but' John Harmon lifted a Lions a 1-0 lead. Another walk to Kenny Clontz re-loaded the bases, Nick Beaver delivered a bases- clearing double to the gap in right- center. Even though the Mountaineers caught Beaver in a run-down between second and- third to end the inning, the damage had been done. Bouncing back from a 4-0 deficit was too much for the young Mountaineers to overcome against Shelby's veteran righthander Carlton Allen, who handed KM one of its four losses during last year's state championship season. The Mountaineers managed just three hits and Allen struck out eight. KM now has only 11 hits in its first three games. Kings Mountain's only run came in the bottom of the first when Kenny Bridges singled, stole sec- ond, moved to third when the catchers throw sailed into center- Shelby over Mountaineers field, and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Michael Bell. Wingo retired the Lions in order in the second inning but Shelby picked up another run in the third inning before KM Coach Nelson Connor called Bryan Leftwich in from the bullpen. Leftwich gave up a singleton in the fifth and three more in the seventh, all as a result of KM errors. Shelby collected six hits, includ- ing two each by Allen and Dellinger, to post its first confer- ence win and third win in five deci- sions overall. Bell led the KM hitting with a double in addition to his sacrifice fly. Bridges and Wingo added a single each. « Score by innings: R-H-E Shelby 401 010 3 9-6-1 K.
