The Caring Program just re- ceived $6,736 raised by Central United Methodist Church of Shelby, through a walkathon held in November 1993. Additionally, 10 Cleveland County businesses donated enough money to insure between 12 to 15 children before the walkathon, Caring Program Development Director Ruth Peebles said, "Churches can make a big differ- ence in children's lives, their fu- tures and their parents’ live by rais- ing money through fundraisers like the walkathon," There are an estimated 1,326 uninsured children living below the poverty line in Cleveland County, according to a University Center for Health Policy Research and Education re- port. The Caring Program now in- sures 31 children in Cleveland County, and there are 10 Cleveland County children on the Caring Program's wait list. Because the $6,736 will enroll 26 children, the Caring Program still needs to re- cruit 16 more Cleveland County children. Peebles said. "We will contact the Department of Social Services, the Cleveland County Health Department and the Cleveland County Schools within the next week. With referrals from these places, we hope to enroll these 16 Cleveland County children by July 1. The Caring Program already has two family physicians, six pediatri- cians, five radiologists, two general surgeons and one orthopedic sur- geons as partners who accept 70 percent reimbursement from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina as full payment. The Caring Program's partner hospital in Cleveland County is Cleveland Memorial. Founded in 1987, the Caring Program for Children provides children with dignified access to primary and preventive health care, and it brings attention to the prob- lem of uninsured children in Nor Carolina, The program is an soumenical; BB non-partisan, non-profit organiza- tion sponsored by the North Carolina Council of Churches. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina and Carolina Physicians' Health Plan underwrite all operational expenses. Telemarketing Chair, Juanita Burns, along with other Hospice supporters, will be calling area businesses and individuals in the Cleveland County area to raise funds for the new Hospice Facility. Volunteers will be making calls to add to the $860,000 already pledged toward the $1.2 million needed to begin construction in 1994, Evelyn West, Executive Director of Hospice, says the goal is attain- able and telemarketing will have a major impact on community awareness of Hospice services to the terminally ill. "Hospice has served over 975 terminally ill pa- tients and their families since 1985 when we began our services," she said, "We also have programs open to the community to help bereaved families and are working with chil- dren who have suffered a loss. We serve persons of any age with any terminal illness regardless of finan- cial status. We couldn't provide this without support from the entire community. Pledges toward the campaign have been tremendous and we are excited about the op- portunity to expand our services in Cleveland County, especially to those who have no caregiver in the home."
