KM man keeps
event on the air
When a severe ice storm hit the
Columbia, Tn. area February 10
and left more than 500,000 homes
without power, it appeared the
Ladies Professional Bowlers Tour
event in Columbia would be can-
« celed.
However, an ESPN crew led by
senior remote control engineer Joe
Brock of Kings Mountain made
sure it took place and was taped
and aired.
Brock, who joined ESPN two
years ago after 10 years with
Jefferson Pilot Broadcasting
Company in Charlotte, found that
his mobile truck, which runs by a
generator, was working. Brock had
to carefully connect the building's
fuse lines in case power came back
in the bowling center while the
generator was connected. Limited
power would be for heating, only
four lanes, lighting and the com-
“puter system which runs the lanes.
Brock said the computer system
was knocked out by the storm and
he had to disconnect and bypass
the complex system so the lanes
could be operated manually.
Brock started the job at 7 p.m.
and headed to the hotel at 3 a.m.
Beth Brock, a substitute teacher
in the Kings Mountain Schools,
had driven her husband to
Tennessee and she said the power
was still off in Tennessee when she
left to return to Kings Mountain.
Thanks to her husband, the bowl-
ing event went on schedule.
Brock is on the road 300 days of
the year with ESPN. He was in Los
Angeles during the earthquake.
The Brocks are parents of two
sons, Stuart, 11, and Daniel, 9.
They have lived in Kings Mountain
10 years.
