Little leagues need sponsors Kings Mountain Parks and Recreation Department is asking local businesses and industries to sponsor girls and boys baseball and softball teams this season. Because the department receives no money to Sponsor teams it must raise $35,700 to outfit all the teams and purchase necessary equipment and pay umpires. Over $20,000 has been raised thus far, but the department is far short of its needs as the season rapidly approaches. Recreation Director Bruce Clark said other teams must have sponsors within the next two weeks. KM golfers fourth in SWC Kings Mountain High's golters finished fourth in the Southwestern 3-A Conference tournament which concluded with an 18-hole round Monday at Cleghorne Golf Club near Rutherfordton. The first round was held last Monday at Kings Mountain Country Club. The Mountaineers were in sec- ond place behind champion R-S Central going into the final round, but their score ballooned to a 685. R-S won with a 311-312--623. South Point came on strong to fin- ish second with a 343-332--675, and North Gaston was third with a 336-342--678. _ Kings Mountain shot 333-352-- 685, followed by Bums 347-344-- Clark said approximately $850 is needed to sponsor and outfit a team. After the initial year spon- sorship costs will decrease to about $250 to $300 because uniforms will not have to be purchased every year. "l don't understand what has happened in the past, but it really doesn't concern me," he said. "What I'm concerned about is that we get-good sponsors and have them feel good about us being re- sponsible for their equipment and uniforms in the future so that once the initial fee is over the yearly sponsorship cost will decrease. 691, Shelby 362-338--700, and East Rutherford 368-374--742. Jason Harrill of R-S Central was the individual champion with a 77- 77--154. For his performance, he will be recognized as SWC Golfer of the Year. The Hilltoppers dominated the event with the lowest four scores. Following Harrill was first round leader Shane Dotson with a 76-80-- 156, John Fenton with a 79-77-- 156 and Greg Owens with a 79-78- -157. Kings Mountain's Brad Leonard finished fifth with a 79-80--159, followed by Steve Denton of North Gaston 80-82--162, Josh Fortenberry of South Point 81-81-- 162, and Hill Hudson of Shelby "I think this is a great service that businesses can provide for young people and it serves as a great advertising tool for their companies." Clark said many businesses are sponsoring both boys and girls teams this year, which results in about $1,500 of support. "It's very much appreciated and it would cer- tainly be nice if others would con- sider helping these young boys and girls with recreation activities for the summer." Anyone interested in helping sponsor a team may call Athletic Director Dale Greene at 739-9631, or Clark at 734-0449. 85-78--163. The top eight individuals earn All-Conference honors.
