Obituaries VAN BIRMINGHAM JR. George Van Birmingham Jr., 74, of 1023 Linwood Road, Kings Mountain, died May 2, 1994 at NC Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. A native of Gastonia, he was the son of the late G. Van and Eva Price Birmingham. A graduate of Gastonia High School and Brevard College, he was a veteran of the Army Air Corps in World War 11 and a member of Central United Methodist Church. He was retired Plant Foreman with Southern Bell after 38 years service and a mem- ber of the Foothills Chapter of The Telephone Pioneers. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Young Birmingham; two daugh- ters, Jane Birmingham Morlan of Simpsonville, SC and Rebecca B. Cooley of Graycourt, SC; and two step-granddaughters. The funeral was conducted by the Revs. Harold E. Schwantes and Robert Little Wednesday at 4 p.m. at McLean & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Gastonia. Burial was in Gaston Memorial Park. Proctor, 76, of Carolina Care Center, Cherryville, died April 28, 1994 at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late Samuel and Dollie O'Conner Proctor, and was retired from Cone Mills. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Kings Mountain. He is survived by his wife, Aileen Lingerfelt Proctor; a son, Jerry H. Proctor of Lexington, KY; a daughter, Barbara Byers of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Sara Chaney of Shelby and Roberta Ellison of Kings Mountain; two grandchil- dren; and one great-grandchild. A graveside service was con- ducted by the Rev. Patricia Stone Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery. LUMAS W. PAINTER Lumas W. Painter, 85, of 10797 - Birch Bluff Ave., San Diego, Cal., died April 30, 1994 in San Diego. A native of Sylva, he was the son of the late John and Callie Painter: j He was twice married, to the late Louise Montjoy Painter and to Pearl Day Painter of Gastonia. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Kings Mountain. Also surviving’ are two sons, Charles Painter of San Diego and Reginald Painter of Kings Mountain; one sister, Lela Boardman of Ranlo; and two grandchildren, Charles Painter II of Oklahoma City, Okla and Robert Painter of San Diego. The funeral will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at Harris Chapel by Rev. James Reeves. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. JOE CASH Joe Cash, 60, of 501 Waco Rd., died April 26, 1994 at Kings Mountain Hospital Emergency Room. A native of Kings Mountain, he was husband of Barbara Bell Cash and the son of the late Vernon and Dolly Adams Cash. He was em- ployed by Fasco Controls in Shelby. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are six daughters, Terri King of Kings Mountain, Susan Rhoades of Norcross, Ga., Terrie Best of Gastonia, Sheila Zona of Tokyo, Japan, Vickie Palmieri of East Haven, CT., and Libby Prostana of Wallingford, CT; two brothers, Lee Cash of Lincolnton and Richard Cash of Meriden, CT; two sisters, Dorothy Melton and Katherine Carroll of Spartanburg, SC; and 10 grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at Harris Chapel. Rev. Eugene Land officiat- ed. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. GLADYS BURTON Gladys Smith Burton, 67, of 423 Chestnut Ridge Rd., died April 26,1994 at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Gaston County, she was wife of Dorse Lee Burton and the daughter of the late Guy and Rosa Self Smith. She was a mem- ber of Penley's Chapel Methodist Church. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are one daughter, Gail Scism of Kings Mountain; two grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at Penley's Chapel Methodist Church. Rev. David Huffstetler officiated. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Falls named national award winner Laura Elizabeth Falls has been named a United States Achievement Academy National Award Winner. She is now eligible to apply for a USAA college schol- arship. Laura is a junior at Fred T. Foard High School in Newton, where she has been active in Deca Club. She also received an award for Computer Business Technology Class, plus a Gold Seal and a cer- tificate and recognition .from English III of Fred T. Foard High School. She has also had eight years of dance and has taught dance for two years. Did you know that MEDICARE and Most PRIVATE Kings Mountain's Teacher of the Year Jackie Blanton and Principal of the Year John Goforth were cit- ed for their innovativeness in the classroom at the annual School Service Awards Banquet Monday night. Supt. Dr. Bob McRae, in pre- senting the coveted honors, said that Blanton had distinguished her- self as an outstanding classroom teacher for 40 years. On any given day of the week, he said a visitor to Blanton's Grover School second grade could see the results of children learning and enjoying the effort. One exam- ple of her creativity was a recent lesson on Johnny Appleseed in which she enlisted a minister from the community to play the role and students joined in baking favorite apple dishes. McRae praised Goforth, princi- pal of Kings Mountain Middle School for a student support pro- gram which has gained state recog- nition and for helping to launch computer technology in the system as principal at East Elementary School. Both educators received plaques and standing ovations from a large audience at Kings Mountain High School Cafeteria.
