Art display at KM library A preview of 50 pieces of art by Kings Mountain students drew an appreciative crowd to Mauney Memorial Library's Weir Auditorium Sunday afternoon. The reception kicked off a three- week exhibit of art work by local students. The exhibit is free and open to the public during library hours, Monday, Tuesday and i Thursday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Shirley Brutko, chairman of the exhibit, said she was well pleased by the turnout of local artists of el- ementary, middle school and high school age. Several of the pieces were blue ribbon ribbons. Margaret Dixon, president of the sponsoring Southern Arts Society, said the show represents versatility in the youthful artists. Punch and party pickups were served by a hostess committee in- cluding A.B. Snow, Salena Trott, Peggy Baird, Johnsie Reavis, Dixon and Brutko. The little quackers strolling the halls at Kings Mountain High School are big hits with the stu- dents. "'Webby" and "Baby" are the ducks which Biology students in- cubated and hatched in the lab, turning the eggs every day. "We observed their chorion, yolk sac, amnion and feathers,” said Amber Robinson, the proud owner of Webby. Shamus Kimble, who owns "Baby," said the ducks really think they are human because they have only seen humans since they came ' from their shells. Linda Bray, instructor, said that during the year her students have had a number of interesting pro- jects. They hatched fish and ob- served the development of the eggs. They are currently raising the young for breeding next year. "We observed feeding and or drinking behavior in the young snakes before letting them go," said Bray, who said that six black Sli A CN TI lt pe i A RA J og dg I] oe Page 8A-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thursday, May 5, 1994 Eric Boyd, seventh grade student, won a red ribbon for his artwork which is on display at Mauney Memorial Library. The students observed heart beat in the fish as well as nervous tissue development, seeing the eyolution- ary patterns from fish, to reptile, to birds and the importance of the eggs and the difference between the composition of each egg. "The ducks provided an added dimension to our learning," said Bray. Students incorporated a little psychology by using them to demonstrate imprinting or bonding. Bray said that behavior is an im- portant aspect of study for her per- sonally and she said the students enjoyed this sideline experiment. Tad Dellinger, a student of Bray, is doing research at the North Carolina School of Math and Science, a program for him made possible by a Rural Science Initiative grant won by Bray last year. Bray and Dellinger will be re- turning to Durham in June to report on the findings of the project.
