Mountain Middle School Monday. Patterson was presented a hand- made Afghan crocheted by stu- dents in third and fourth period art classes and used the occasion to talk to the students about growing up during the Great Depression. "Sugar cost so much that I had to quit drinking sugar in my coffee," she said. "There was no such thing as television and we had to plan our own entertainment around the sup- per table." Mrs. Patterson, a native of Hickory Grove, SC, said her late husband, Boyce Patterson, started courting her when she was about 20. They didn't have a car so they double dated with another couple.
