Dabbs-Herndon
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Barry Dabbs of Elgin, SC announce the engage-
ment of their daughter, Rhonda Michelle, to Jeff Scott Herndon, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Charles W. Herndon of Lugoff, SC, formerly of Kings Mountain.
Miss Dabbs is a 1989 graduate of Lugoff-Elgin High School and a 1993
graduate of the University of South Carolina majoring in Elementary
Education. She is employed by Kershaw County School District.
The bridegroom-to-be is a 1990 graduate of Lugoff-Elgin High School
and is employed by Herndon, Incorporated of Lugoff. He is the grandson
of Mrs. Evelena Noor and the late William A. Herndon and Fred M.
Owens and the late Martha C. Owens of Kings Mountain.
The wedding will take place July 16 at 7 p.m. at Blaney Baptist Church
in Elgin, SC.

APC needs volunteers
Are you looking for a rewarding
experience? Do you enjoy giving
of yourself? Do you believe that
women should be free from vio-
lence?
If so, the Abuse Prevention
Council is always in need of volun-
teers who possess these qualities.
Client advocates are needed as
well as volunteers to operate the
crisis line, serve as counselors and
court advocates and to operate the
thrift store.

volunteers in June 4 from 9 a.m.-3

Classes Set
Classes have been scheduled by
the American Red Cross at the
Cleveland County Chapter
Building, 215 Patton Drive, in
Shelby.
HIV/AIDS information is avail-
able to any group, according to
Claudia Rose, program director.
Standard First Aid will be taught
May 24 and 26, June 28 and 30,
July 18 and 20 and August 23 and
25 from 6-10 p.m.
Adult CPR will be taught May
24, June 6, June 28, July 12 and
18, August 8 and 23 from 6-10
p.m.
Community CPR will be taught
June 6 and 8, July 12 and 14, and
August 8 and 10 from 6-10 p.m.
Infant and Child CPR will be
taught June 8, July 14 and August
10 from 6-10 p.m.
Community CPR and First Aid
instructor's course will be taught
June 13 and 14 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Advanced Life Support will be
taught June 13,14, and 15 from 6-
10 p.m.
An HIV/AIDS instructor course
will be taught July 8 and 15 from 9
a.m.-5 p.m.

basement of the Red Cross at the
Red Cross Office. Class size is lim-

Food distribution
June 15 in Shelby
The June 1994 distribution of
surplus commodities is scheduled
for Wednesday, June 15 at the
Shelby Armory.
Commodities available are apple
juice, applesauce, butter, peanut
butter, raisins, rice, cornmeal, fruit
cocktail, orange juice, peaches,
vegetarian beans, great northern
beans, green beans, and pears.

Activities slated
at Crowders park
Special activities are scheduled
for Saturday and Sunday at
Crowders Mountain STate park.
A wildflower hike will be held
Saturday at 2 p.m. Meet at the park
office.A ranger will lead a trail-
blaze through lush bottomland and
rich woodlands in search of color-
ful, blooming wildflowers. The
hike is limited to 30 people and
will last about 90 minutes.
A tree folklore program is
planned for Sunday at 2 p.m. Meet
at the park office. Participants will
learn what oak trees and the hang-
man's noose have in common, how
Baton Route, La. got its name, and
much more from Duane Crane,
volunteer naturalist. Wear comfort-
able clothes and walking shoes for
a leisurely walk through the
woods. The program will last about
90 minutes.

CJ Shope wins pageant
Charles James "CJ" Shope, two-
year-old son of Howard and Tina
Shope, won the Little Mr. Shelby
pageant recently.
He won first place in most pho-
togenic and first place in the
sportswear category.
CJ wore a two-piece blue and
white shorts set for the sportswear
competition and a white tuxedo
with fushia pink tie and cummer-
bund for the formal wear competi-
tion.
He is the grandson of Becky
Randolph and the great grandson
of Sally Davis. He-is also the great
nephew of Randy and Delores
Davis.

Hawkins honored
at bridal shower
A lingerie shower for bride-elect
Ann Hawkins was held recently at
the home of Page Wells.
A variety of lingerie accessories
were presented to Miss Hawkins
including gifts from the bride-elec-
t's mother, Barbara Hawkins, and
her future mother-in-law, Janet
Smith.
A hostess gift was given along
with a ceramic basket of soaps,
bath lotions, bath beads, and wash-
cloths by Leslie Dover, Kim Roper,
Marsha Ware, Page Wells and
Andrea Tucker.
Party pickups of ham and cheese
delight rolls, cheese ball and crack-
ers, BBQ wieners, vegetables and
dips, cherry cheese cake and soft
drinks were served as guests ar-
rived.
Miss Hawkins became Mrs.
Marvin Smith at a 3 p.m. ceremony
on April 2 at Boyce Memorial
ARP Church.
The bride is a 1989 graduate of
Kings Mountain High School and a
1993 graduate of Appalachian
State University with a degree in
Elementary Education. She is a
fourth grade teacher at Grover
Elementary School.
KMJA looking
for volunteers
Kings Mountain Hospital Junior
Auxiliary is looking for volunteers
over the age of 15 to spend two
hours each week at the hospital.
New male and female volun-
teers are invited to an orientation
program on June 3 at the hospital.
Mandy Jones is president of the
group and Amy Dixon is vice-pres-
ident. To volunteer, call Dot Ham
at the hospital, 739-3601.
Volunteers provide extra ser-
vices that add to the comfort, care
and happiness of the hospitalized
person. They also supplement the
activities of the regular staff, by re-
lieving them of duties not requiring
professional training, thus allowing
more time for staff to spend with
patients.
