Food distribution June 15 in Shelby The June 1994 distribution of surplus commodities is scheduled for Wednesday, June 15 at the Shelby Armory. Commodities available are apple juice, applesauce, butter, peanut butter, raisins, rice, cornmeal, fruit cocktail, orange juice, peaches, vegetarian beans, great northern beans, green beans, and pears. A wildflower hike will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. Meet at the park office.A ranger will lead a trail- blaze through lush bottomland and rich woodlands in search of color- ful, blooming wildflowers. The hike is limited to 30 people and will last about 90 minutes. A tree folklore program is planned for Sunday at 2 p.m. Meet at the park office. Participants will learn what oak trees and the hang- man's noose have in common, how Baton Route, La. got its name, and much more from Duane Crane, volunteer naturalist. CJ Shope wins pageant Charles James "CJ" Shope, two- year-old son of Howard and Tina Shope, won the Little Mr. Shelby pageant recently. He won first place in most pho- togenic and first place in the sportswear category. CJ wore a two-piece blue and white shorts set for the sportswear competition and a white tuxedo with fushia pink tie and cummer- bund for the formal wear competi- tion. He is the grandson of Becky Randolph and the great grandson of Sally Davis. He-is also the great nephew of Randy and Delores Davis. CHARLES JAMES SHOPE Hawkins honored at bridal shower A lingerie shower for bride-elect Ann Hawkins was held recently at the home of Page Wells. A variety of lingerie accessories were presented to Miss Hawkins including gifts from the bride-elec- t's mother, Barbara Hawkins, and her future mother-in-law, Janet Smith. A hostess gift was given along with a ceramic basket of soaps, bath lotions, bath beads, and wash- cloths by Leslie Dover, Kim Roper, Marsha Ware, Page Wells and Andrea Tucker. Party pickups of ham and cheese delight rolls, cheese ball and crack- ers, BBQ wieners, vegetables and dips, cherry cheese cake and soft drinks were served as guests ar- rived. Miss Hawkins became Mrs. Marvin Smith at a 3 p.m. ceremony on April 2 at Boyce Memorial ARP Church. The bride is a 1989 graduate of Kings Mountain High School and a 1993 graduate of Appalachian State University with a degree in Elementary Education. She is a fourth grade teacher at Grover Elementary School. KMJA looking for volunteers Kings Mountain Hospital Junior Auxiliary is looking for volunteers over the age of 15 to spend two hours each week at the hospital. New male and female volun- teers are invited to an orientation program on June 3 at the hospital. Mandy Jones is president of the group and Amy Dixon is vice-pres- ident. To volunteer, call Dot Ham at the hospital, 739-3601. Volunteers provide extra ser- vices that add to the comfort, care and happiness of the hospitalized person. They also supplement the activities of the regular staff, by re- lieving them of duties not requiring professional training, thus allowing more time for staff to spend with patients.
