and mayor pro tem.
Bridges said that any purchases
had to be approved by City
Council and she had checked the
minutes and found no record of
their prior approval.
Bridges said Tuesday she
planned to continue to monitor
emergency spending since a freeze
in both hiring and spending is in
effect until July 1. ;
"What's fair for one employee
should be fair for all," said
Bridges.
Under the city's Council/City
Manager form of government the
city manager is the chief executive
officer of the city and in his or her
position has the authority to hire
and fire and oversee a staff of 160
plus people. The authority also in-
cludes preparation of the city bud-
get which must be on on the table
for public review by June 1 and ap-
proved, under law, by June 30.
Council's interview process
schedule calls for semi or final in-
terviews of candidates for city
manager to be concluded on June 3
and 4.
The mayor has indicated the
new manager could be on the job
by July 1.

leading edge of combating the cur-
rent crime wave, leading anti-drug
marches, holding state-wide and
anti-drug conferences and calling
for drug testing. She suggested that
closed military bases be used as
boot camps and prisons and pushed
for double times for crimes against
children and the elderly and abol-
ishment of "good time" parole.

NOTICE TO ALL VETERANS ...
Who have honorably served their country in war and peace, because of the distance to a national cemetery, we at
‘freeze has affected all departments .
At Council's direction one per-
son's job was cut due to budget
cuts, one employee was transferred
to another department and no va-
cant positions were filled.
The 77-year-old employee who
lost his job in the water/sewer de-
partment has asked City Council to
waive the policy which gives city
employees full benefits after 20)
years. He has been with the city 18
1/2 years and wants his supplemen-
tary and dependent insurance cov-
erage to continue.
No formal grievances have been
filed. :
Bridges said that one employee
of the finance department has
asked City Council to return her to
her former position. The woman
was filling some of the duties of
former Assistant Finance Director
Parsons since the resignation of
Finance Director Jeff Rosencrans
with an eye to promotion. Last
week, however, Council indicated
it would not fill the position of
Assistant, since that would have
been more money allocated in the
budget.
"I think all our employees would
feel more secure if Council can get
on with the budget and get buick: to
normal," said Bridges.
"I don't know “about the other
members of the board but I'm.get-
ting a lot of calls."
