Student Sarah Anderson makes sure Principal Sherrill Toney gets
thoroughly soaked in the dunking booth during West School's recent
celebration of the success of its Accelerated Reading Program.
West celebrates
reading success
“Since November West School's
third, fourth and fifth graders have
participated in a new reading pro-
gram called the Accelerated
Reader. The objective was to read
as many library books as possible,
to pass a computer generated test
on each book read, and to earn
points for each test passed.
As students earned points they
. were rewarded with buttons, ice
cream, hats, and the opportunity to
go out and play putt putt and eat
pizza if they made the Principal's
Club. In order to make the
Principal's Club, students had to
earn a minimum of 75 points.
-Actotal of 24 students’imade the
Principal's Club and were rewarded
with a trip to play putt putt on May
25. Students making the club were

Betler, David Phanareth, Chris
Bennett, Matthew Echols, Nathan
Carpenter, Virginia Neisler, Katie
Bennett, David Moschler,
Stephanie Rikard, Ian Blanton,
Nicole Baliles and Erica Odems.
In addition to the third, fourth
and fifth graders, second and third
graders were allowed to participate
beginning in March. They did so
well that two of the second graders,
Erica Odems and Matthew Echols,
earned enough points to make the
Principal's Club.
The program was a huge suc-
cess. Students more than doubled
the school's goal of 3,000 points
with a final point total of 8,390.
~ Because of making the goal all
members of the Principal's Club
and at least 24 other children were
given the opportunity to participate
in dunking the principal on May
20. All students had a great time
watching the dunking, and
Principal Sherrill Toney was
dunked many times.

Students plant tree in memory of Jamey Hunt
Her friends at Bethware School
paused Monday on Memorial Day
to remember the life of a brave lit-
tle girl whose untimely death at the
age of 10 will be remembered
when they watch the growth of a
new pink dogwood tree they plant-
ed on the lawn.
Jamey Hunt was remembered
because of her love for family,
school and people.
Dr. Chip Sloan, pastor of First
Baptist Church, conducted a brief
memorial service after which a
pink dogwood tree was planted on
the lawn.
Debbie Dye, president of the
Bethware PTO, also took the occa-
sion to present a check for $5,582
to the Hunt family, the proceeds
from a recent fundraiser for Jamey.
Dye said that the Rogers Sisters
and Mink, entertainers for the spe-
cial event, donated their time and
talents for the hot dog supper
planned by PTO members.
"We are very grateful to every-
one for their love and support,"
said Cathy and Jim Hunt, parents
of Jamey.

ing ceremonies were Hospice nurs-

brain tumor.
Jamey celebrated her 10th birth-
day February 20-27 with her par-
ents and her sister, Amanda, on a
Disney World Cruise, a gift from
the Make a Wish Foundation. The
week after the trip her condition
worsened. Jamey died May 7.
