2 EE ETE - Sl SR ma esd ETRE TS Reading program setatlibrary Summer time is reading time at Mauney Memorial Library. - The theme for this year's pro- gram is "Dive Into A Book." We will explore the oceans, rivers and lakes, the beaches, the rocky shore line, the reefs, and immerse our- selves in the pleasure of reading, The kick-off program on Thursday June 9 at 10:30 a.m. will feature the puppet team of First Baptist Church. REgular program- ming will begin on Monday, June 13. On Mondays, ages 3 and 4 will meet at 10:30 a.m., and ages 5 and 6 will meet at 4 p.m. On Thursdays, ages 7 and 8 will meet at 10:30 a.m. and ages 9 through 12 will meet at 4 p.m. Day Camp will come on Tuesdays, and other day care centers will come on Wednesdays., The program will focus on ac- quatic themes. The acquarium at the front desk sets the mood for the Summer Reading Club and is pro- vided by Kings Mountain Farm Center. The exhibit will change from time to time throughout the summer. Children and parents will be re- sponsible for recording the books read and keeping a log. Children will earn sand dollars for the book they read, and will be able to spend their sand dollars at the Treasure Shop, which will be stocked with small toys, book marks, and dis- count coupons. The Summer Reading Club will end with a pool party at the Recreation Center. Cookies and SCOTT WHEELER Scott Wheeler named to spring dean's list, Scott Wheeler of Kings Mountain was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Central Wesleyan College in Central, SC. To make the list, a student must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher with no grade below a 3.0 while taking 12 or more hours. Kendrick marshal at UNC-Charlotte Jewell Kendrick of Gold Run Court, Kings Mountain, was one of 12 juniors chosen to act as mar- (shals for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte commence- ment ceremonies May 14 at the Charlotte Coliseum. The 12 juniors have the highest cumulative grade point averages among full-time student who were enrolled during the fall 1993 and spring 1994 semesters. Miss Kendrick is an English ma- jor. NCSSM taps Anderson, Smith Erin Anderson and Susan Smith, sophomores at Kings Mountain High School, have been offered a unique adventure in learning - join- ing the Class of 1996 at the N. C. School of Science and Mathematics. NCSSM's next juniot class of 263 was chosen by the admissions selection committee from 945 ap- plications the school received prior to the January 15 deadline this year. These new students from 83 North Carolina counties will come to the statewide school from 160 high schools. The class of 1996 in- cludes 119 females and 144 males. Approximately 25.6 percent of the incoming juniors are minority. KM students make UNC-W dean's list Heather Ruth Caveny and Kimberly Lynn Ware of Kings Mountain were named to the spring semester dean's list at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Students with 12 to 14 hours must earn a GPA of 3.5 or better with no grade less than B to be eli- gible for the dean's list. Students with 15 or more hours must earn a GPA of 3.2 or better with no grade less than B. ROSE TURNER . @ KM Librarian TT soft drinks will be served, and life guards will be provided. All chil- dren who eam a certificate will be eligible to attend the party. It's going to be an exciting sum- mer at Mauney Library. So "Dive Into A Book" and splash into read- ing. AE NATHAN BIVIN CULLOWHEE - Nathan Bivins, son of Randy and Robin Bivins of Shelby, has been selected to attend the Legislator's School for Youth Leadership Development at Western Carolina University. He attends Burns Middle School in Lawndale and is a rising eighth grader. He is an honor student and has received the President's Cup Award and 1993 National Honor Award from the U.S. Achievement Academy.He is a member of the Beta Club and serves as vice-presi- dent. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 112, and is a first-class Scout. He has also received the 1991 Babe Ruth Sportsmanship Award, and was a member of the Burns Middle School baseball team. He enjoys playing baseball, fishing and hunt- ing. She Legislators’ School for Youth Leadership Development of- fers some 300 rising eighth through 12th graders an opportunity to de- velop skills in leadership, critical thinking and communication. Located on the campus of Western Carolina University, the three-week residential program utilizes the cul- tural and recreational resources of + WCU and the setting adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is operated in two sessions, June 18-July 8 for 10th through 12 graders, and July 10-30 for eighth and ninth graders, by WCU's Office for Rural Education. During their stay, students par- ticipate in academic and special in- terest courses in photography, jour- nalism, computers, art, astronomy and other topics. Community ser- vice work and discussions about current issues, led by state and re- gional leaders, are important as- pects of the program. It is funded by the General Assembly.
