She is pursuing a career in cosmetology and will be attending college in the fall. Gamma Beta Phi induction held Cleveland Community College's chapter of the Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society recently held induc- tion ceremonies. The 23 initiates were selected because each has a grade point av- erage of 3.5 or higher while taking 15 or more quarter hours. Dr. Collette Deviney, assistant principal at Burns High, was the guest speaker. Ron Teague, presi- dent of the honor society, presided, and Mark Towery, vice president, introduced the speaker and led the invocation. Dr. L. Steve Thomburg, president of CCC, pre- sented the credentials and Mrs. Barbara Taylor, Gamma Beta Phi advisor, presented special awards and installed officers. Deborah W. Harris, former teacher at Burns High, was pre- sented the North Carolina Gamma Beta Phi Excellence in Education Award. Sandra Jurek was recog- nized as Gamma Beta Phi member of the year for receiving the high- est number of points in various club activities. Certificates of ap- preciation were presented to retir- ing officers Ron Teague, Mark Towery, Donna Biggers, Carol McCraw, Tonya Scism, Shaunda Blanton, John Hawn and Kay Huskey. Frank Love Orchestra to play at CCC Cleveland Community College will host Frank Love and the Cleveland Community College Orchestra on Father's Day June 19 at 2:30 p.m. in the College's Student Activities Center. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Dr. Stan Hardin Memorial Scholarship Fund at the College. Performing with the band will be trumpeter and Shelby native Johnny Best, who played with Artie Shaw, Les Brown, Benny Goodman and Glenn Mlller Orchestras Love said that the orchestra will play music from the Artie Shaw and Glenn Miller Orchestras from which Best received notoriety. General admission tickets are $6 at the door. Tickets for senior citizens and students are $5. News Briefs Dinner theatr Kings Mountain Little Theatre and the Kings Mountain Woman's Club will present dinner theatre Friday and Saturday, June 17 and 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Woman's Club. Admission is $15 for dinner and the show by the Little Theatre, a repeat performance of "Barefoot In The Park," a three-act comedy by Neil Simon. The evening's entertainment be- gins with a 6:30 p.m. reception fol- lowed by dinner at 7 p.m. in the club banquet room and the play at 8 p.m. in the first floor auditorium. Dessert will be served during inter- mission. Bakers announce birth of daughter Dr. and Mrs. Bryan Scott Baker announce the birth of their first child, Elizabeth Davis Baker, June 4, 1994. She weighed six pounds, 1 1/2 ounces and was 19 inches long. Kings Mountain grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. William H. Davis and Dr. and Mrs. Thomas P. Baker. Great-grandmothers are Mrs. Lillian Henderson and Mrs. Elise Davis. The baby's mother is the former Pat Davis. ; Activities slated at Crowders Park Special activities are planned this weekend at Crowders Mountain State Park. Saturday at 10 a.m. at the lake parking area, a basic canoe skills and safety program will be offered. Parents and kids age 10 and over will learn basic skills and safety procedures of canoeing. Call to re- serve a place and wear comfortable clothing and shoes to get wet. An Easter Box Turtle program will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the park office. Live turtles will be used. The program will last 45 minutes. Connie Phifer honored at bridal luncheon Bride-elect Connie Phifer was honored recently at a luncheon at First Presbyterian Church Manse. Dr. Jane King and Mrs. Shirley Austin were hostesses and took the occasion to present Miss Phifer with a gift in her china pattern. Fresh flowers decorated the din- ing tables. Thursday, CLARENCE WHETSTINE Clarence Whetstine notes 77th birthday Clarence Whetstine of Grover was 77 years old on May 31. He was honored at a fish fry at his home on Long Branch:Road on May 28, hosted by his children, David, Carolyn and Diane Whetstine. His grandchildren, great-grandchildren and brothers and their families also attended. Mr. Whetstine's grandchildren include Bobby Whestine, Tinna Rhames, Donnie Roper and Kim Roper. Great-grandchildren are Barry and Davey Rhames, Whitney and Trey Roper, Sarah Roper, and Daniel, Abbey and Rachel Whetstine. Shovelin appointed to state committee Wayne F. Shovelin, FACHE, President and CEO for Gaston Health Care, has been appointed to the North Carolina Health Planning Commission's Advisory Committee on Benefits, Subcommittee on Primary, Acute and Chronic Care Services. The Benefits Committee is one of 13 such committees charged with the responsibility of assisting the Health Planning Commission develop a universal health care program to provide all state resi- dents with access to quality health care. Dina Foster joins Shelby law firm Forrest Donald Bridges and R. L. Gilbert III have announced that Dina Farley Foster has become a partner in the firm of Bridges, Gilbert and Foster, P.A., 201 S. Washington St., Suite 201, Shelby. Foster is originally from Richmond, Va. and graduated from Mercer Law School in 1991. She is married to Skip Foster and lives in Kings Mountain.
