AWARDS From Page 1-A material from Duke University that indicated she did have the grades to qualify. "After this, I wonder if all of this is intentional," she said. Mrs. Bolin said she checked with Principal Goforth and all of Crissy's teachers, and that some teachers had told her that they "turned in" Crissy's name for awards. "This is too many mistakes for one child," she said. Goforth said in a telephone in- terview Tuesday that the matter was "an oversight on the teachers’ part." Goforth explained that team teachers decided the criteria for outstanding academic achievement. "It doesn't necessarily mean high- est average," he said. "Teachers were to list their outstanding aca- demic achievers. There are no guidelines. It's up to the teachers. I can't tell them how to choose that." Asked why Crissy's name was marked through on one of the awards and another student's name written in on the list brought to the Herald for publication, Goforth said the list was prepared in early May and "when they got the final averages they averaged some more scores in for accelerated reader and changed that one." Goforth said after investigating the situation he chose to present awards to Crissy also, because teachers of other "teams" interpret- ed highest academic achievement to mean the students with the high- est grade averages. "Crissy's team chose to do some- thing different, so just to be consis- tent with what other teams were doing we decided to go with averages also," he said. Goforth said in the future the school will probably "get away from averages altogether and go with end of grade testing reports. That's consistent across the grade. All kids are doing exactly the same thing there. "A 100 in one class may not be as difficult to attain as a 95 in an- other class," he said. "To be fair across the grade levels we need to go to end of grade test results. Everybody's on the same playing field there. "Highest academic achiever does not specifically give you a guide- line," he added. "To me a child who achieves greater than what you thought their potential was might be the highest achiever. If we say highest academic average that spells out what we'll do." LILLIE HUDGINS CLOVER, SC - Mrs. Lillie Hudgins, 85, of 108 Alexander Street, died June 13, 1994 at Kings Mountain, NC Hospital.
