Jowever, it is very important for ildren not to let their skills skip ackward, but to practice using hem throughout the summer so | ‘that when school begins in August, they will not be behind. The Summer Reading Club at Aauney Library provides an excel- t opportunity to practice reading skills during vacation. The child is couraged to read on his own lev- and at his own pace. The prac- ce he receives during the summer will improve his reading skills and will help him achieve on a higher evel in subjects next year. Sometimes reading skills can be mproved by gaining a better un- derstanding of phonics. Summer can also be a time for pew ventures and new experiences. The child can learn a new lan- guage, delve into a new area of sci- ence or history, learn to sew or cook, or explore any number of new subject areas. The child is free to follow his interests and explore new territories. Listed below are some of the new videos which will enrich your child s summer and help him improve his skills. (i _ "The Hear-See-Say Approach to Easy Reading" (Melody House Publishing, n.d.) This kit consists of three audio cassette tapes and a reproducible workbook. It was designed to pro- vide supplementary activities for slow or beginning readers but has also been used successfully with preschoolers. Children learn the sounds of the letters and letter combinations by saying the sounds along with the tapes.’ By reading Linda Bray, Kings Mountain High School biology teacher who reports to school at 6 a.m. every day, was honored as the winner of the Terry Sanford Award for cre- ativity in the classroom by the Kings Mountain Association of Educators Tuesday. Bray says she starts early to set up exciting times for her students which have included study groups, trips to the Outer Banks to study marine life, and computerized re- views for end-of-year tests. On any given day of the week Bray's students are involved in a number of activities from supervis- ing such projects as hatching snakes to field trips. Bray also volunteers as a diving coach. A native of New Jersey, she and her husband, Ronnie, a teacher, are parents of three children. "Hip Hop Multiplication Music Video" (Rapability Publishing Company, 1991) Mastering the basic multiplica- tion facts is essential to a child's ability to perform well in math at any level. This multiplication music video has fun, live-action dancing, up-beat sing-along lyrics and captivating graphics designed for endless replays. Your child learns the songs and automatically learns the facts. "Letters and Numbers" (Twin Sisters Productions, 1993). This kit, consisting of an audio cassette and an activity book, is de- signed to teach young children let- ter names, beginning letter sounds, and numerical sequences through a variety of original and familiar melodies. Simple, easy to sing melodies encourage child partici- pation resulting in hours of whole- some learning and fun. "Multiplication Rock" (Golden Book Videos, 1987). Academy Award winner Cloris Leachman and a group of young friends share a lively half hour of cathy songs and skits that make learning about multiplication fun and easy. "Rhythm, Rhyme and Read Phonics, Consonants and Vowels" (Twin Sisters Productions, 1992). Designed and produced by two elementary school teachers, this kit, consisting of a book and tape and poster, introduces the vowel and consonant sounds in a delight- ful manner. Teaching through rhythm and music is a highly suc- cessful way for students to master basic skills. The audiocassette and reproducible activity book offer an exciting alternative to drills and practice exercises. "Rock 'N Learn Letter Sounds: Phonics for Beginners" (Brad Caudle and Richard Caudle, 1992). Bray, who has taught at KMHS three years and was previously a computer system administrator for a major law firm in Charlotte, a le- gal secretary and a quality control advisor for an industry, was pre- sented the plaque by Betsy Wells and KMAE President Janet Smith. After the awards presentation, the Chapter honored retiring mem- bers with gifts. Retired educator Dean Westmoreland installed the new of- ficers, including Mike Smith, pres- ident; Rhonda Thompson, vice- president; Valerie Boyd, secretary; and Carole Dye, treasurer.
