Phillips, volunteer coordinator at the Senior Center, is a former award recipient. -Virgie Farris was honored Saturday with the coveted Charles R. Walker Volunteer of the Year Award by the Kings Mountain Senior Center. Mrs. Farris received the plaque at the annual Senior Center Volunteer Brunch. Farris has volunteered over 500 hours at the Senior Center and was recognized for her involvement as : Church Briefs Drama set June 18 at Wayside Church The drama, "I Searched All Over Heaven For You," will be present- ed at Wayside Church of the Living God at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 18 by East Hudson Baptist Church. The church is located on Long Branch Road between Shelby and Kings Mountain. The pastor, Rev. Clifton Morgan, invites the public. : Bible School slated at Nazarene Church The Church of the Nazarene, 405 S. Cherokee Street, Kings Mountain, will hold its annual Vacation Bible School June 20-24 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Classes are available for children ages three through 12 years. This year's emphasis, "Awesome Adventures with Jesus and David," will represent a new format for the church. Each class will enter a dif- ferent learning center or environ- ment each night. One night a child will be in a cave environment, and the next night he will be in a pas- ture setting, etc. "All in all, this will be a whole new way to experience the truth of God's Word and His Son, Jesus," said Rev. Robert Pulkkinen, pastor. Co-directors, Sherran Cameron and Debbie Baity, welcome all boys and girls between the ages of 3and 11. Bible School slated at St. Peter Church Vacation Bible School will be held at St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church in Grover June 20-24 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. each evening. The public is invited. Russell Fitts to speak at Dixon Presbyterian Rev. Russell Fitts, former pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church, will fill the pulpit during the 11 a.m. worship service Sunday at Dixon Presbyterian Church. The public is invited. Dr. Voorhis to speak at Cherryville church Dr. George Voorhis will speak at the Cherryville Church of God on Sunday, June 26, in both services. Dr. Voorhis is a professor at East Coast Bible College in Charlotte. He has served as a pastor, evange- list, Bible teacher and in other po- sitions. Sunday School begins at 9:45, morning worship at 10:45 and evening services at 6 p.m. Rev. Todd Phillips, pastor, invites the public. transportation coordinator and for clerical assistance. Mrs. Betty Cotten Cox, Senior, Center Specialist with the NC Division of Aging in Raleigh, was guest speaker. She praised the vol- unteers for their labor of love to se- nior adults of the Kings Mountain area. Making the presentation to Farris volunteer of year Farris was Mrs. Charles Walker. The brunch menu included casserole, heavenly hash, chicken nuggets with honey mustard, blue- berry and cranberry breads, fresh oranges, punch, coffee and tea. After the meal and awards cere- mony, Aging Director Monty Thornburg led the large crowd of volunteers in a balloon lift off. ATHER’S rr a Councilman Jim Guyton said in open session of City Council Tuesday that although he voted to keep the city engineering depart- ment intact he would have to side with the four men who voted to close it. "When the majority speaks, I lis- ten," he said. The comments came when Mayor Scott Neisler entertained a motion that the board rescind its former action during a work ses- sion and fund the engineering de- partment --two jobs --in the 1994- 95 budget. After a lengthy discussion, City ~ Attorney Mickey Corry interrupted and said that no actions could be taken during the public hearing. Tom Howard, who loses his job as Community Services Director and engineer on July 1, remained in the room while he was under * discussion by Council and several citizens who questioned the duties Jane Campbell Academy to present "Aladdin" Students of Jane Campbell Dance Academy will present "Aladdin" Saturday at 7 p.m. at Barnes Auditorium. : The cast will feature Ginger Blalock as Jasmine; Michael Wray as Aladdin; Teresa Lyman as Genie; Ricky Huffman as Jafar; Mindy Reynolds as Abu; and Jason Armstrong as Sultan. Lou Ballew questioned the costs of outside engineers coming to Kings Mountain for minor projects. "We need someone locally who is here for us," she said. "I think it's all right to change your mind even though we know that majority rules," said Rev. M. L. Campbell. "I'd like for us to to wait until June 28 to tell Tom Howard if he will have a job on July 1," said Neisler, who said that the budget won't be voted on until June 28 and changes can be made. "We can afford an engineer," said Neisler. "[ feel like we are doing a lot of nitpicking," said Guyton. "I voted to keep the engineering department but I will stand with the majority decision."
