MICHAEL BELL Ewe we KEVIN MELTON © ww CEP OWE Le SHAREE HOPPER sire fa— KENNY BRIDGES Four Mountaineers make All-Conference team Kings Mountain High placed four players on the 1994 All- Southwestern 3-A Conference baseball team which was an- nounced today. Representing the third place Mountaineers were catcher Kevin Melton, infielder Michael Bell, pitcher Sharee Hopper and out- fielder Kenny Bridges. Pitcher-shortstop Bryan Cobb of league champion East Rutherford was voted Player of the Year. All four of the KM honorees had banner seasons as new coach Nelson Connor rebuilt the team af- ter last year's state championship run. Only two of the four players - Melton and Hopper - were mem- bers of last year's team and they played back-up roles. Hopper, who pitched last sea- ‘son's state championship win, was one of the league's most consistent | pitchers. He had a 4-3 record, but all three of his losses were against the league's top two teams - East Rutherford and South Point. In 48 innings of work, he struck out 39 batters.and compiled a 2.62 earned run average. Melton had a slow start at the plate but came on strong to finish with a .273 batting average, and he was a consistent performer behind the plate. He scored 14 runs and shared the team RBI lead with Robert Wingo with 13. Bridges, who came on strong late in the season, was the #2 hitter for the Mountaineers with a .328 average. He collected 20 hits in 61 times at bat, scored 10 runs and drove in eight. Bell anchored the KM defense at third base and carried the team of- fensively during the early stages of the season. He hit in the high .300s much of the year but tailed off at the end to finish with a .259 aver- age. He led the team in doubles and also scored 13 runs. Wallace wins fourth at Pocono LAKE POND, PA. - Rusty Wallace dropped to the lower side of Dale Earnhardt for a pass in turn one of the final lap to win Sunday's UAW-GM Teamwork 500 at Pocono International Raceway. The controversial one-lap shootout was set up when Mark Martin blew a tire on lap 194, lead- ing debris on the track. Wallace, who had led 140 laps to dominate the race, pitted along with other leaders on lap 195 for fuel and new tires. Wallace now has four wins for the 1994 season. Earnhardt, second as they pitted, made a two-tire change to beat Wallace, who changed all four, out of the pits and assume the lead un- der caution with four laps remain- ing. "Jeff Gordon, running third, exit- ed the pits but slid off the track, weaving back and forth to heat up - his tires. While momentarily stuck in the infield, several cars passed him. Gordon returned to the: third spot and laps counted down under caution as NASCAR officials tried to get him to move behind the cars that passed him while he was stuck in the mud. Wallace's crew chief, Buddy Parrott, was furious with NASCAR officials and Gordon's crew chief, Ray Everham, as Gordon held his position. Gordon claimed he knew nothing of NASCAR's request. With only one lap remaining, and Gordon still in third, starter Doyle Ford displayed both the green and white flags. Earnhardt, the best on restarts, saw the lead go to Wallace as his car was slow coming up to speed. Ken Schrader finished third, followed by Morgan Shepherd, Martin, Gordon, Irvan, Brett Bodine, Rick Mast and Bill Elliott. NASCAR black-flagged Gordon at the finish and "assigned" him sixth place instead of third. They contended that's where he probably would have finished. They also placed him in front of Irvan and Bodine, assuming he would pass their ailing machines on the restart. Frustrated crew chiefs have been calling NASCAR since Monday for rulings on their situations. They are confused about NASCAR's in- decision on realignment for the restart and then their assignment of positions following the race. Irvan leads Earnhardt in the Winston Cup series by 139 points. For the second consecutive week, the Wallace and Irvan cars were the class of the field, with Irvan siowing at the end on seven cylinders. Wallace should have the incen- tive to win this Sunday's race at Michigan International Speedway. His car owner, Roger Penske, owns the track and his sponsor, Miller Genuine Draft, is also sponsoring the race. Wildeats win two to run mark to 8-0 Kings Mountain's Babe Ruth baseball team ran its record to 8-0 with a pair of big wins last week. The Wildcats defeated Belmont Optimist 19-1 behind the pitching of Ty Toney and David Clark. Scottie Martin led the offense with a home run and Jeremy Cooke added three hits. The Wildcats blasted McAdenville 11-1 in a battle of un- defeated teams. Both teams entered the game with 7-0 records. Cooke pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts. Toney's grand slam home run highlighted an eight-run ‘first inning and David Clark added two hits. Cooke's three-run home run in the fourth put the game out of reach. Ballenger will teach Social Studies. He has coaching experi- ence at Boiling Springs and Hillcrest high schools in South Carolina, but most recently has been in private business.
