MRS. ROBERT ALAN GATES (Angela Genenne Hare) Outing by garden clubbers featured tour of herb gardens Members of the Kings Mountain Garden Club and their guests gathered at the home of Mary Mauney on the morning of May 26 where they began an ex- cursion to the home of Dr. Ruth Wrensch, noted herbist and author of the book, "Essence of Herbs." After a look at the beautiful spring gardens of their hostess, members loaded into cars and vans and headed to Rutherfordton's Tanner Restaurant for lunch. Then it was on to Laurel Ridge where Wrensch tends more than 350 kinds of herbs surrounding her contemporary, gray-stained house. Wrensch met the group on the porch of her home and led them through several gardens, each with a different theme. She spoke of how, upon her arrival in North Carolina some 15 years ago, she amended the soil on the wooded lot and used imagination to create en- vironments suitable for herbs from around the world. For instance, a rock wall soaks up winter sun to warm plants too fragile to survive the cold. A raised bed encourages air circula- tion for plants that do not appreci- ate humidity, and a small pool keeps the surrounding ground cool. Wrensch explained that a herb must be documented before it can grow in the garden. It must have looking a creek, have been both a laboratory and resting place for her and her husband, Bernard. As she concluded the tour of the gardens, she described the annual gatherings of garden enthusiasts who drank May wine (apple juice flavored with sweet woodruff) to celebrate the May 23 birthday of Swedish botanist, Carl Linnaeus, who initiated the biomial naming process. : She then invited the group into her sunporch for their own celebra- tion of Linnaeus’ birthday before the return trip to Kings Mountain.
