Water problems continue
to plague Grover citizens
GROVER - Preliminary testing
of the town's well has revealed
trace amounts of a resin from PVC
pipe used in the water system and
the town is back on Kings
Mountain's water system.
Mayor Ronald Queen said
Grover has had minor water con-
tamination problems since March.
Queen said the pump to the well
has been turned off for about a
month while the problem is under
investigation. He said the pump
will be turned back on and water
run into the town wastewater treat-
ment facility before the well is test-
ed again in September.
The Town board Monday ap-
proved $18,000 in the new fiscal
year budget for water from Kings
Mountain, plus $25,000 for water
testing and $12,000 for sewer test-
ing.
"We're staying on top of the
problem," said Queen, who said the
town has spent $4,000 for water
tests in June.
In other business, Commissioner
Robbie Sides restated his request
that council members be assigned a
particular area of the city opera-
tions, such as police department,
streets, water, recreation and main-
tenance for which each would be
responsible.
Sides has said on several occa-
sions that he thought it only fair for
council members to share the
responsibility of town administra-
tion with the mayor and said it
i
i
would be helpful for citizens to
have other people to address partic-
ular problems to. Sides said that
Grover has followed this procedure
in past years.
Town Attorney Mickey Corry
said he was unaware of any ordi-
nance on the books permitting
commissioners to take such ac-
tions, but if the board wanted to
take this active role, such an ordi-
nance should be adopted.
Sides asked that the item be
placed on the August agenda.
Sides also asked the attorney to
research the minutes about recent
action he claims the board took on
a contract to a private citizen for
the city's old fire truck. Corry said
he is concerned that if the owner-
ship of the truck remains the town's
property that the town will be li-
able. Commissioner Jack Herndon
said no vote was taken on the con-
tract.
Sides also asked Corry to search
the charter and give an opinion on
whether the mayor has the authori-
ty to appoint all committees.
Queen said he has no problem
with Sides' suggestions that a cer-
tain commissioner serve as com-
missioner of streets, police, etc.
Sides also asked about progress
on street repairs and asked if
Asphalt Paving had been called
about doing street repairs in town.
The mayor said that the contact
had been niade.
