GOLD GROVER - John Packard Gold, 75, of 105 Gold Street, died July 2, 1994 at Gaston Memorial Hospital, A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Ben and Minnie Packard Gold. He was a re- tired textile employee and a mem- ber of First Baptist Church. He was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II and served with the 5th Armored Division in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a former semi-pro base- ball player, a former Kings Mountain American Legion base- ball coach, and was coach of the Grover softball team which won the state championship in 1957. He was also an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife, Lois Hicks Gold of the home; a son, Richard Gold of Shelby; a daugh- ter, Sharon Sizemore of Kings Mountain; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service was con- ducted by the Rev. John Bridges Monday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church. Burial was in Grover Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Grover Rescue Squad, Main Street, Grover, NC 28073; First Baptist Church, Cleveland Avenue, Grover, NC 28073; or Cleveland Home Health Agency, 719 Grover Street, Shelby, NC 28150. PAULINE H. NORRIS Pauline Haynes Norris, 65, of 812 First Street, Kings Mountain, died July 1, 1994 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Matt Franklin and Lottie Alice Chaney Haynes. She ‘was a retired textile employee and a member of East Kings Mountain Church of God. She is survived by two sons, Gary Norris and Scott Norris of Kings Mountain; three sisters, Thelma Watts of Mt. Holly and Ruby Worthen and Barbara Ross of Kings Mountain; and a grand- daughter, Destiny Barrett. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. John Heath Sunday at 3 p.m. at East Kings Mountain Church of God. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. BILLY JOE PRUETT DALLAS - Billy Joe Pruett, 38, of 221 Holly Ave., died June 29, 1994 at House of Mercy in Belmont. A native of Gaston County, he was a former funeral director and gospel singer and promoter for 10 years. He attended Gaston College and Gupton Jones College of Funeral Service in Atlanta, Ga. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 515 in Bessemer City and a U.S. Army veteran, Surviving are his mother, Mary Lou Crump Siggmon of Gastonia; his adopted father, Martin Buren Pruett of Gastonia; one child; five brothers, Danny Black, Steve Black and Kenneth Pruett, all of Dallas, Ronnie Black of Gastonia and Bobby Pruett of Belmont; two sisters, Dianne Hamrick of Shelby and Kathy E. Long of Bobi City. The funeral was conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at Hillview Baptist Church. Rev. Revis Fox officiated. Burial was in Gaston Memorial Park. EFIRD Mrs. Laura Edna Baucom Efird, 89, of 714 Canterbury Road, Kings Mountain, formerly of Locust, died July 4, 1994 at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Union County, she was the daughter of the late James Thomas Calvin and Laura Smith Baucom, and was wife of the late Emest Lee Efird. She was a home- maker and a member of Shiloh Advent Christian Church in Monroe. She is survived by two sons, Charles Efird of Sumter, SC and - Lawrence Efird of Locust; two daughters, Mrs. Elinor Wilson of Baton Rouge, La. and Mrs. Ruth Piper of Kings Mountain; 23 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchil- dren; and seven great-great-grand- children, She was preceded in death by a daughter, Estelle Burris. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. F. Banks Setzer Thursday at 2 p.m. at Shiloh Advent Christian Church, Sikes Mill Road, Monroe. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in the church ceme- tery. Memorials may be made to Grace Advent Christian’ Church, West 3rd Avenue, Gastonia, NC 28052. EVELYN RAMEY Evelyn Thrift Ramey, 63, of 220 Lackey Street, Kings Mountair, died July 5, 1994 at her home. A native of Brevard, she was the daughter of the late Eliza and Josie Galloway Thrift. She was a home- maker and a member of Family Worship Center Church of God. She is survived by her husband, James Walter Ramey; three sons, Keith Ramey and James Ramey Jr. of Kings Mountain and Dennis Ramey of Gastonia; two daughters, * Brenda Childers and Teresa Camp of Kings. Mountain; two, brothers, Howard Thrift and Ervin Thrift of Rock Hill, SC; two sisters, Beatrice Eubanks of King Mountain and Margaret Adkins of York, SC; five grandchildren; and one great- grandchild. The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. James Allen, Wray Barrett and Robert Haynes Friday at 3 p.m. at Family Worship Center Church of God. Burial will be at Mountain Rest Cemetery. Olin Byrum III, 34, re- turning to Kings Mountain was a homecoming. The new pastor of Kings Mountain Baptist Church served as the church's Minister of Youth for two summers in 1986-87 and led the Wednesday night Bible studies and coordinated youth retreats. Byrum has been pastor of Union Road Baptist Church in Gastonia since 1989, seeing the church grow from 65 to 110 members with an average attendance in Sunday School 48 and morning worship 60. A native of Charlotte, Byrum was reared in Belmont where he graduated from South Point High School in 1978 and was a member of South Point Baptist Church. He earned his BA in Religion from Gardner-Webb University in 1984 and his Master of Divinity Degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary at Wake Forest in 1988. He married Jane Armstrong .on November 30, 1991. . Mrs. Armstrong is office manager for Carolina Ear, Nose and Throat in Gastonia. Byrum said he made a profes- sion of faith in Christ at eight years of age and his call to the ministry became very real to him after he graduated from high school and en- tered Gardner-Webb University. "I have a strong commitment to the ministry and to the pastorate because I know I am called of God," said Byrum.
