CAROLYN B. CLARK
SHELBY - Carolyn Bennett
Clark, 62, of 707 Sanders Rd., died
August 22, 1994 at Cleveland
Memorial Hospital.
She was the wife of William
Aubrey Clark and the daughter of
the late Volney and Mary Davis
Bennett. She was a homemaker
and a member of Mulls Memorial
Baptist Church.
Surviving, in addition to her
husband, are two sons, Stephen
Aubrey Clark and Gary Dale Clark
of Shelby; one daughter, Sheila
Jean Swift of Charlotte; four broth-
ers, Alvin Bennett of Spindale,
Roy Bennett of Winston-Salem,
Baxter Bennett of Rutherfordton
and Henry Bennett of Virginia; two
sisters, Edith Elliott of Polk
County, Dorothy Brown of
Rutherfordton; four grandchildren,
Selina Ellen Clark, Tracy Lynn
Clark, Shaun Wendall Swift and
Thad Aubrey Clark; and one great-
grandchild, Christopher Clark. She
was preceded in death by one
daughter, Vickie Lynn Clark and
two sisters, Ellen Poteat Nodine
and Katie Bennett.
The funeral will be conducted
Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mulls
Memorial Baptist Church by Rev.
Ervin Price. Burial will be in the
church cemetery.

HARVEY LEE RUPPE
Harvey Lee Ruppe, 62, of 1305
W. Gold St., Ext., Kings Mountain, °
died August 21, 1994 at his home.
A native of Cleveland County,
he was the son of the late Paul Lee
and Ethel Mae Allison Ruppe, and
husband of the late Maxine Dulin
Ruppe. He was employed by Dixie
Yarn Pinkney Plant in Gastonia.
He is survived by two sons,
Vernon Lee Ruppe of Smyrna, SC
and Charles Keith Ruppe of Kings
Mountain; two stepsons, Jack
Dulin and Bobby Dulin of Clover,
SC; two daughters, Janet Loretta
White and Melba Juanita Ruppe of
Clover, SC; two stepdaughters,
Linda Dulin of Clover, SC and
Stacy Calhoun of Belmont; two
brothers, Bobby Dean Ruppe of
Holden Beach and William Oren
Ruppe of Gaffney, SC; three sis-
iers, Barbara Jean Hardin of Mt.
Holly and Flora Mae Ruppe and
Frances Ruppe Morton of Kings
Mountain; 16 grandchildren; and
two great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted by
the Rev. Larry Burns Tuesday at 4
p.m. at Faith Baptist Church.
Burial was in Mountain Rest
Cemetery.

GRAHAM - Myron Alexander
‘Rhyne, 82, of 211 E. Parker St.,
= died August 17, 1994 at 5:55 a.m.
at The Hospice Home of
Alamance/Caswell following sev-
= eral months of declining health.
A native of Kings Mountain, he
“was the husband of Sarah
* Hambright Rhyne and the son of
“the late Claude Quincy and Cora
+ Long Rhyne.
He retired in January 1981 after
“almost 40 years in the textile busi-
= ness as Vice-President and Director
of Operations for Cannon Mills
= Decorative Fabrics Division. He
“was in charge of Plants No. 6 in
Concord and No. 14 in Graham,
= with the combined operations in-
cluding seven mills. He was elect-
ed a Cannon Vice-President in
1972.
Graham's Mayor for 24 years, he
= served as a member of the Graham
City Council for over a quarter of a
= century. He was elected to the city
council four years before becom-
= ing mayor in 1958 and served until
= 1981 when he chose not to seek re-
~ election. He was a member of the
~ Board of Directors of the N. C.
League of Municipalities from
1975-71.
Rhyne served on the initial
Board of Directors of the Technical
College of Alamance (Alamance
Community College) and contin-
ued to serve as trustee until August
1984.
Rhyne's service to the communi-
ty also included a 29-year tenure
as a member of the Board of
Trustees of Alamance Memorial
Hospital. He served as chairman of
the board from 1959-63, leading
the efforts in site selection, fund
raising and construction of
Alamance Memorial Hospital
which was dedicated on December
7, 1961.
He had been a member of the
Board of Trustees of May
Memorial Library, a member of the
= board of directors of First Union
= National Bank and The Bank of
Alamance. He also had been a
== longtime member of Macedonia
“= Lutheran Church in Burlington.
A 1934 ROTC graduate of North
Carolina State University, Rhyne
was called into active duty with the
Army in February 1942. He served
for three years and three months
overseas in the African and
European Theaters during World
War II.
While in North Africa, he served
as port quartermaster in Suez and
in Alexandria, Egypt. He helped
establish Air Transport Command
depots for the China-Burma-India
supply route and was quartermaster
for the Armed Forces in the Middle
East. After the war in Europe was
ended, he operated a staging area
in Casablanca, Morocco for troops
returning to the United States. He
held the Legion of Merit and Army
Commendations medals for this
service.
In 1948 following his discharge
from active duty, Rhyne helped or-
ganize Alamance County's first
Army Reserve Unit, the 3278th
Civil Affairs Group. He served for
10 years as the commanding offi-
cer and was the last surviving orig-
inal member of this reserve unit.
Colonel Rhyne retired in
September 1965 from the Army
Reserves after 31 years and three
months of active and reserve ser-
vice.

Surviving, in addition to his

Rhyne Andrews of Graham; son-
in-law, Dennis Gilmore Andrews
of Graham; one sister, Mrs. A.T.
Dellinger of Kings Mountain;and
three grandsons, Rhyne Ellington,
Neal Andrews and Chase Andrews,
all of Graham.
The graveside service was con-
ducted Friday at 2 p.m. at Graham
Memorial Park with full military
honors. Dr. Ralph E. Jones Jr. and
Dr. William C. Weckerly officiat-
ed.

Senior programs to receive gran
Carolyn Bell, Activities Director:
at Kings Mountain Senior Center,
has announced that the N. C.
Senior Citizens Federation Inc. has
received a second year grant from
the N. C. Department of Human
Resources, Office of Economic
Opportunity, to continue its
statewide outreach effort in assist-
ing potentially eligible senior ap-
plicants in applying for public enti-
tlement benefits.
Since inception, the Federation's
efforts have been aimed at promot-
ing self-reliance among the elderly
poor. This statewide effort has be-
come a part of the agency's life-
long efforts, according to Bell.

Saturday, September 3, at
Municipal Park.
Grover Woman's Club is spon-
soring the fun day which begins at
11 a.m. and will be topped off with
