Page 2A-THE KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thursday, October 6, 1994 God helps make humans a little more humane Not long ago I caught on television the tail end of what seemed a pretty good human’ interest story. In a field on the edge of a small midwestern town, people had come from near and far to make history. Not 1m- portant history, mind you, just history. Their goal was to break the record for the largest "sit-down" meal ev- er. And there among the hay bales and cow. patties were rows upon rows of fold-out tables of every size and variety. Toward one end of the field stood four or five of the largest soup cauldrons I have ever seen in my life, each stirred by a young man with what looked to be something like a canoe oar. It was fast food at its fastest. As 1 watched this bizarre sight 1 couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to be a part of something so big. But it didn't take long to answer that question. Because a roving television camera in the crowd an- swered it for me. It showed young and: old, black and white, rich'and poor. And without exception, everyone looked to be having the time of their lives. One mid- dle-aged woman was so giddy about it all that she drank her soup from her sneaker. Yum. So what about that day on the edge of that small town engendered such smiles? I first thought it might be the excitement over breaking a record, albeit a.com- pletely insignificant one. But that thought soon turned south as I remembered some other attempts at record- breaking. For instance, once upon a time in my home town of Paducah, Ky., a group of high school students parked themselves on a platform in the middle of the Paducah Mall in an attempt to break the record for the most hours with no sleep. After a few days, they didn't seem happy at all. Babe Ruth team wins two games Kings Mountain's Babe Ruth baseball team captured two more victories in fall baseball action over the weekend. On Saturday, the Wildcats blast- ed Pineville #1 18-6. David Clark hurled four innings of two-hit ball to earn the win. Leading hitters were Scottie Martin with two hits and Ashley Bivins with' two: dou- bles. On Sunday, Kings Mountain de- feated Pineville #2 7-1. Ty Toney and Jeremy Cooke combined on a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts. Ashley Bivins led the offense with three runs batted in and Greg Jarvis added a key two-run single. And something about that revelation seemed then and still seems now so true of human nature. In fact, what I dis- covered by watching a news clip of slap-happy Midwesterners, God seems to have known about us humans a long time ago. One of the most significant Jewish celebrations is the traditional Seder meal. And one of the most significant Christian sacraments is the Lord's Supper, the Eucharist, the Mass, Communion, whatever you happen to call it. God appears to have known long ago that when otherwise feisty, uncooper- ative and downright nasty people get together over a meal, they warm up a little bit. And the chances for genuine understanding and compassion among us rise ‘ever so slightly. So it is that even in the opportunities to sop, sit down and share a bite to eat, God has blessed us with his marvelous grace. That realization probably won't change the face of the planet anytime soon. But it just might cause us to stop and say a word of thanks. And it just might make us humans a little more humane.
