I — A — sn SEE 3 Hunt's magical transformation After cqfling for and approving the largest spending plan in thd history of the Tarheel State - $10 billion - Govemor Hunt is now calling for tax cuts next year. Well, it's aflittle too late your Excellency! Where ere you, Governor, when the call went up last year fi 5? You were standing in line for the feeding our legislature wanted to spend one-quar- on dollars on pork-laden "preventative pro- grams” rather than additional prisons for violent of- fenders? You were touring the state hawking the "Family Resource Center" and "Save Our Schools" SO- cial programs. And, what about the Budget Session of the General Assembly? You approved all sorts of ways to spend the almost fone billion dollars in surplus tax dollars and refused to | ght for a rebate for the hard working mid- dle-class taxpayer. Where does this lead you? All of your "tax and spend" shenanigans landed you on the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal with an "F" and one of the low- est rankings in the nation as a "Free- -Spender." Now, it's apparently time for you to change your image. With interest rates going up, democrats facing fire from all corners and signs that the economy may be slowing, the negative effects of North Carolina's high tax status on business development, the Governor is wise tol "run for cover" early. Hunt, the ever savvy politician thas already begun the innocuous statements. ter of a bil r three-quarters of a billion dollars in pork- GUEST COLUMN THOMAS GOOLSBY Carolina Syndicated Columns Recently, after hiring a large accounting firm to study possible tax cuts, Hunt stated, "I believe that this is the time to look at hard tax relief for families and for businesses." Too bad that the Governor didn't "believe" in tax relief just a few months ago during the budget session of the General Assembly. With his sup- port, North Carolinians could have been saved mil- lions in taxes and invigorated our economy with capi- tal freed up from government coffers. Instead, Hunt and friends decided to go on a spend- ing spree of over $10 billion that included spending al- most all the one-time billion dollar budget windfall. With the next gubernatorial election just a couple of years out, Hunt now wants to begin his magical trans- formation from "tax-and-spender"” to "fiscal conserva- tive." If North Carolinians live up to their past history of long-term memory loss, he can probably get away with it. Besides, what's a few billion dollars between friends?
